THE ANDREW MARR SHOW INTERVIEW: SOFA CHAT VINCE CABLE & ED BALLS SEPTEMBER 9Th 2012

PLEASE NOTE “THE ANDREW MARR SHOW” MUST BE CREDITED IF ANY PART OF THIS TRANSCRIPT IS USED THE ANDREW MARR SHOW INTERVIEW: SOFA CHAT VINCE CABLE & ED BALLS SEPTEMBER 9th 2012 ANDREW MARR: Meanwhile, two gentlemen. I think there’s a kind of chemistry. I can see a sort of little bit of a warm love-in going on here. VINCE CABLE: Well I have chemistry with lots of people in public life. (Marr laughs) That’s being grown-up and … ANDREW MARR: Yes. VINCE CABLE: … I’m very happy to talk to Ed. I talk to my Conservative colleagues in government in an equally businesslike way. ED BALLS: But we’re not texting. We’re not texting; we’re talking. (laughs) VINCE CABLE: 1 But I text because of course I’m the Minister for Digital Industry, so … ED BALLS: Of course. ANDREW MARR: So you have to text. VINCE CABLE: … my competence is in that area. But I don’t do too much of it. ANDREW MARR: Do you think, the two of you, that you are sort of in your basic instincts quite similar - I mean both essentially men of the Left? VINCE CABLE: Well I’ve always … I’ve not been embarrassed to show myself as somebody on the Centre Left in a sense. I do believe in fairness and income distribution, and I also believe in having a successful business sector and competition, a market economy. ANDREW MARR: Yes. VINCE CABLE: Those two things have got to be married together. That’s the big challenge of politicians in the Western world. ED BALLS: Sounds right to me, sounds right to me. ANDREW MARR: As a political observer, I’m going to ask you - not a player - do you think you’re going to have Mr Clegg as Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the next election? 2 VINCE CABLE: Of course he will. ED BALLS: I would be very … Look, it’s easier for me, harder for Vince. I would be very surprised if Nick Clegg fights the next election for the Liberal Democrats and I don’t think it’s in the Liberal Democrat or in the national interest. But that’s a matter for Vince; it’s not a matter for me. And what we want is what’s best for the country and I think actually Vince has distinguished himself by always making the argument about what’s right for Britain. VINCE CABLE: Well flattery doesn’t necessarily deal satisfactorily with the issue. (Balls laughs) We’ve got a very good Deputy Minister. I’m very happy working with Nick. He will continue in the job and the government will … ED BALLS: (over) Would he say Centre Left … Would he say Centre Left? ANDREW MARR: Alright. Would he? Centre Left? VINCE CABLE: I’m sure he would. ANDREW MARR: He would. Alright, gentlemen both, thank you very much indeed. ENDS 3 .
