Syllabus Of CERTIFICATE COURSE In PSYCHOMETRICS (w.e.f. 2018-19 admitted batch) DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY GITAM SCHOOL OF GANDHIAN STUDIES, GITAM (Deemed to be University), VISAKHAPATNAM Accredited by NAAC with ‘A+’ Grade 1 Programme Description Psychometrics as a sub-discipline of the field of psychology with a focus on theory and application of psychological measurement which includes measurement of intelligence, aptitude, personality in general and micro areas of human behavior where applicable. Objectives of the Course Facilitate a theoretical and applied understanding of human behavior at work Equip the HR manager to scientifically assess behavior at work using the methods and tools of psychometry, where standardized tools are available Encourage scientific test construction when the situation demands in areas of behavior where standardized tools are not available Duration and Class Schedule • This course is offered over three months, with two batches in an academic year. • Duration: 3 Months. 3 sessions, of one hour each from 4 pm - 5 pm, per week, that is 3 hours per week. • The classes are conducted at GITAM School of Gandhian Studies, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam Campus. • Class Schedule: Classes shall be conducted on three week days from 4 pm - 5 pm (3 hours per week). • Total number of hours is 30 hours. Test Construction: Item Writing; Item Analysis; Reliability; Validity; Norm Development. Psychophysical techniques – Reaction Time; Embedded Figures; Geometric Illusions; Thresholds, Signal Detection UNIT – II Perception: Nature; Perceptual Constancy; Illusions; Perception of Movement; Role of Motivation and Learning in Perception; Perceptual Abnormalities. Learning and Memory: Classical Conditioning; Operant Conditioning; Observational Learning; Human Memory; Memory Distortion and Construction; Forgetting. Problem Solving; Stroop Effect; Short-term Memory. Intelligence: Nature; Measuring Intelligence; Mental Retardation; Emotional Intelligence. Abilities: Assessment of General Abilities – Intelligence, Aptitudes; Assessment of Special Abilities. 3 Abilities: Standard Progressive Matrices; Emotional Quotient; David’s Battery of Differential Abilities. UNIT – III Personality: Freud’s Psychoanalytic Approach; Roger’s Self Theory; Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs; Trait and Type Approaches; Measuring Personality; Personality Disorders. Personality: Assessment of Values and Interests; Assessment of Interpersonal Behavior; Self-report inventories; Use of semi-projective and projective techniques; Qualitative Methods. Personality: 16 Personality Factor Scale; Multiple Personality Type Indicator; Thematic Apperception Test. UNIT -- IV Psychopathology: Neuroses; Psychoses; Psychosomatic disorders; Organic Brain Disorders; Substance Abuse; Stress. UNIT -- V Assessment of Abnormal Functioning: Substance Abuse; Stress; Anxiety; Depression and disease- prone personality. Assessment of Abnormal Functioning: CAGE; Presumptive Stressful Life Events; Beck Anxiety Inventory; Beck Depression Inventory; Type A personality test. 4 Syllabus Of CERTIFICATE COURSE In CHILD PSYCHOLOGY (w.e.f. 2018-19 admitted batch) DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY GITAM SCHOOL OF GANDHIAN STUDIES GITAM (Deemed To Be University), VISAKHAPATNAM Accredited by NAAC with ‘A+’ Grade 5 Programme Description Child Psychology is a branch of psychology with a focus on normal child development and understanding of behavioral and psychological disturbances in childhood and adolescence. The course would also focus on the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in child guidance, thus bringing in a combination of psychological measurement, guidance and counseling in childhood behavioral and emotional issues Objectives of the Course To facilitate a theoretical and applied understanding of major childhood and adolescent developmental periods and relevant issues To equip the student to gain insight into childhood behavioral problems To gain an understanding of the psychological tests for assessment of intelligence in children for the purpose of suitable placement ( in case of school needs) To encourage child guidance and counseling for minor behavioral and emotional problems in children , so as to help improve the scholastic and behavioral issues Duration and Class Schedule • This course is offered over four months, with two batches in an academic year. • Duration: 4 Months. 3 sessions, of one hour each from 4 pm - 5 pm, per week, that is 3 hours per week. • The classes are conducted at GITAM School of Gandhian Studies, GITAM (Deemed to be University), at Visakhapatnam Campus. 6 • Class Schedule: Classes shall be conducted on three week days from 4 pm - 5 pm (3 hours per week). • Total number of hours is 40 hours. Eligibility • The participants must have completed graduation Teaching Faculty • Internal Faculty of Department of Applied Psychology & Humanities and Social Sciences, GITAM School of Gandhian Studies, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam Campus. Evaluation Procedure • The course shall have two components of evaluation: a) Continuous evaluation of 50 marks, comprising of case studies, testing, practicals and assignments. b) Final Examination of 50 marks, comprising of a written examination. • Final Score for 100 Marks shall be calculated for the continuous evaluation and final examination; and grade shall be as per the grading system below. Total no. of credits for the course: 10 credits 7 SYLLABUS The course comprises of three papers inclusive of a paper on case submissions and a mini project Paper I: Child and Adolescent Development UNIT I 1. Introduction to Child Psychology; Approaches to Child Development; Research Methods in developmental psychology UNIT II Theories of human development : psychosexual theory of Freud ; Erikson's psychosocial stages ; leaning theories ;Piaget's cognitive theories, Attachment theories, Systems theories & Kohlberg's theory of moral development. UNIT III 1. Genetics, Heredity and environmental influences on development; prenatal development, hazards; perinatal and postnatal environment and hazards 2. Development through the childhood & adolescence in brief; Developmental milestones in physical, cognitive and social areas; gender roles and sexuality in childhood and adolescence. Temperamental Differences in Children UNIT IV Mental health disturbances in children and adolescents ; Abnormalities in development , Characteristics, risk factors, and warning signs of students at risk for mental health and 8 behavioral disorders, developmental disabilities; Problems faced by children & caregivers UNIT V Intellectual disability ; Learning Disability ; Autism ; ADHD and condu Internalizing disorders ; Brief Introduction, etiology, symptoms;Associa problems(Identification & assessment in another paper). Paper II Assessment and Management Unit I Psychological assessment definition, need in children, advantages and disadvantages, ethical issues. Specific issues of assessment of children with intellectual disabilities, including mental health and behaviour, relevance of severity of intellectual disability Unit II Different types of assessment; developmental assessment, intellectual assessment Introduction to developmental scales like Bayley's, Gessell's , Denver Developmental schedule and VSMS. Assessment of Intelligence SFB, BKT, CPM, Bhatia's battery, WISC & MISIC. 9 Demonstration of all tests Unit III Brief Introduction of personality and behavioral tests; CAT, RCPT, CPQ Introduction of tests to assess specific problems in childhood. It also emphasizes personal growth and self enhancement as an important goal. This course provides a basic training in counseling theory and skills. It combines academic, practical and experiential components within a supportive and challenging environment. During this course, the students will be given an in-depth knowledge of some of the psychotherapeutic approaches including person-centred and cognitive behavioural approaches.
