Mike Christian Unity: One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism Christian Unity Week is observed each year from January 18 through January 25, which is the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. During this week, we can pray together for fuller unity among Christians, and recognize that we already share a common Faith and a common Baptism. One of the most edifying and joyous areas of my ministry as a priest, although it occupies a very small slice of my time, is my ecumenical involvement. Since I have been in Monroe County, I have been active with the Dundee Interfaith Council, and I have served as the organization’s president in recent years. I find that fellowship with other Christians of various denominations is so enriching—I wish that more of my parishioners could experience it! Dundee Interfaith has a special service for Thanksgiving each year at one of the member churches in the Dundee area with all the clergy taking part in the service. A free-will offering is taken up for a local charity. Each spring, there is a Lenten prayer breakfast and program. A few years ago, we tried to have Christian Unity Services in late January, but we discovered that the severe January weather in Michigan kept people away. There is a business meeting every other month, and Dundee Interfaith works closely with “Caring & Sharing.” This ministry, based in western Monroe County, helps the needy with food and basic toiletries, as well as Thanksgiving baskets for families, and winter items for children such as gloves, hats, and sweatshirts. It seems that the rural parishes in Monroe County of all denominations are so small and have such limited funds and resources, that we have to band together to serve the poor and needy in the larger community as we do with “Caring & Sharing”—that’s how we can be effective! I know that there are other ministerial associations in Monroe County, especially in the city of Monroe, but I have not yet gotten in touch with them. I am sure that a lot of good ministry is being done throughout the vicariate in partnership with other Christian churches. When I think about the ministry of Pope St. John Paul II, I remember his constant outreach to people of other faiths. John Paul praised the good in other religions, apologized for the evil that was done ages ago, and sought reconciliation and harmony. He and his successors have sought out Christians and non-Christians alike in dialogue, prayer, and acts of goodwill. The Vatican has released a document entitled “Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism.” (It can be found at www.vatican.va.) Although we as Catholics do not yet have full communion or inter- communion with those of non-Catholic Churches, we are encouraged to pray together for unity, to read and study the Scriptures together, and to collaborate in the works of charity. Paragraph 22 of the “Ecumenical Directory” states: The ecumenical movement is a grace of God, given by the Father in answer to the prayer of Jesus and the sup- plication of the Church inspired by the Holy Spirit. While it is carried out within the general mission of the Church to unite humanity in Christ, its own specific field is the restoration of unity among Christians. Those who are baptized in the name of Christ are, by that very fact, called to commit themselves to the search for unity… To live our Baptism is to be caught up in Christ's mission of making all things one. By the way, the Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute is an excellent source. You can check out their website for information on ecumenism, including materials for prayer services, and other resources for parishes and individuals, at www.geii.org. Peace Fr.
