Kris and I were thrilled at all the grateful and positive comments from Competitors from around the world. Among the most meaningful to us were the comments on the hospitality and welcoming spirit of the many club members who worked so hard to put on what will be long remembered as one of the best J/24 Worlds in history! The list of members and volunteers to thank is long indeed. Among those who stood out are Dan Peck and his facilities team who moved, launched and hauled 96 boats and their trailers throughout the regatta - including hauling 88 boats in four hours on the last day of the regatta!., Donna DePeters and her registration team who guided 500 sailors through registration - dealing with the arcane process of J/24 measurement, insurance, crew weight, and many language barriers (Thank God for teachers!) Chris Dorsey who stepped up to provide spectator and support boats for our many guests ., Donna Faust, Betsy Lawless and Linda Summers who ran a world class web presence and media team that provided constant coverage of results, photos and stories to Facebook, Twitter, coveritlive.com and other sources. Our own Reid Stava helped provide complete measurement of all 96 competitors’ boats over a total of five days! He helped train several new J/24 Class measurers at the same time, a daunting task to be sure. Club manager Mary Smith and her house staff provided food and drinks for 500 competitors each day of the regatta - including during several rain squalls that rolled through the club. Our office staff of Karen Servis and Petra Land dealt with emails, faxes, numerous deliveries and office visits from sailors from 12 nations including many over the counter visits with yours truly. Our yard staff headed by the peerless Miles Bliss put in many hours helping us put together facilities throughout the regatta including a couple of unscheduled midnight repairs on broken hoist control boxes and a burned out hoist motor. (continued) 3 Rochester Yacht Club Special mention has to go to Jack DePeters, Terry Shannon, Brook Richardson, John Murfin, Eric Voss, Dean Grancelli and others who drove donated tractors throughout the regatta moving boats and trailers. A big “thumbs up” to Ed Gardner and Hugh Turner who measured in 400 sails during the regatta. My special thanks to Pete Cucci and Jack DePeters who guarded our budget. A Big Kudos to Megan Cucci who was our liaison for the the 13 member International Jury. Special thanks to Jane Kinsella for spearheading program booklet ad sales. A big thank you to Hank Stuart and Wayne Bretsch, and all our Race Committee volunteers, who put together 10 races in very challenging conditions. Special Thanks go out to Frank and Shirley Shumway who so generously allowed us to use their marina property and facilities as well as provided a generous grant from their foundation. Also to Phillip and Marilyn Wehrheim for their kind and generous patronage to the regatta. Our eternal gratitude to Skip Shumway who provided wisdom, experience, expertise and who handled the regatta for Kris and I so that we could go out and race. There are so many others to thank who are not mentioned by name here but please be assured, we know who you are and you have our gratitude! Most importantly, a huge thank you to the members of the club for all your support in allowing us to host a memorable 2012 J/24 Worlds! You helped us achieve our goal and made history! See you around the club! Lambert and Kris 4 Rochester Yacht Club Commodore’s Message “Have you got a minute?” I could not help but notice that the fall season has arrived in earnest. The water is low and the salmon are already splashing in our basin. I still love to get in an oc- casional afternoon sail at this time of year with the low sun and warm lake water and a gentle offshore breeze. I hope that you’re planning to join us on Saturday, October 6th for our annual RYC “Up The River Cruise & Raft-Up.” After that… we can say another great boating season is complete. The Quantum Loop Solutions 2012 J/24 World Championship Regatta is over and our Club has received praise and accolades from the J/24 Class officials, the competitors, the judges and the ISAF Measurers who attended a pre-regatta -cer tification course. I offer my congratulations to Kris Werner and Lambert Lai as the Co-Chairs of the event. The planning and execution by our members of the reg- istration and measurement process set a positive tone right from the beginning. Our Race Management Team lead by PRO Hank Stuart did a fantastic job, in difficult shifty conditions to get all 10 scheduled races completed. Congratulations to Mike Ingham and his 11th Hour Race Team for being the top RYC entry in 4th place (out of 96 boats). Thank you to everyone who helped with housing, spectator boats, and for being generous supporters of the competition. It is truly a pleasure to have visiting sailors seek me out to rave about our great facilities and our friendly members. We have so much to be proud about. Racing Fleet Captain Eric Voss recently sent out an email requesting member recommendations for our major awards at Cups ‘N Flags. Please take a moment to review the trophy criteria descriptions (link is below) and then send us your suggestions – it is really helpful to remind us of member contributions and achievements that we might not know about. We are again applying a stay the course mentality, which is to continue to pay down our debt, while growing our membership, and managing to our annual budget. Our major capital project for the January shut down will be the tear out and replacement of the upstairs kitchen floor and the installation of a new sota dishwasher. We have had a leaking floor problem for several years, so we have committed to remedying this problem before it grows in magnitude. The other major capital expense next year will be dredging. After waiting many months, we just received our new dredging permit. We currently anticipate contracting with the company that has been hired to remove the CSX swing bridge abut- ments and dredge in the river. Very soon we will be restarting the “Pot-Of-Gold” drawing on Friday nights. I expect to be announcing an added twist this year, so please plan to make Friday’s at RYC part of your weekly ritual. Fair winds, Keith Burhans, Commodore 5 Rochester Yacht Club RYC Board of Directors Meeting Minutes September 13, 2012 Commodore Burhans called the meeting to order at 1900 hours. Moment of Silence: Observed in memory of Helen Ingerson who passed away 8/25. Treasurer Joe Altobelli reported on finances for the month. For the month of August revenue was up and expenses were down. This created a surplus and left us under budget as we head into our fiscal 4th quarter. We are over budget on the Capital Fund this year, but considering the amount of improvements that have been completed and the strong financial position the club is currently in, we do not see any cause for concern at this time and will continue to closely monitor these expenses. Club Manager Mary Smith reported that we are ready for the J/24 Worlds Regatta; Red Cross Blood Drive on 9/27; upcoming coastal navigation course; and plans are shaping up for the annual “Up the River Cruise”, set for 10/6. Current census: _404__ members (full dues) Audit Vince Campbell provided an update on Member vs. Non-Member income; August was just slightly higher than the 15% five year average (IRS threshold), however, expenses that will ultimately be deducted are included (improving the calculation). The Audit Committee will continue to monitor progress and safeguard our IRS tax-exempt status. Finance Treasurer, Joe Altobelli – budget requests were sent to all Committee Chairs requesting first look by 9/21. Joe is willing to provide assistance to Committees as needed.
