September 2015 2nd Edition Fellow Compatriots, This issue of the Mechanized Cavalry Calendar Takes us back to a sense of normalcy as far as the bi-monthly calendar is concerned. While the threats against our Southern Heritage remain Active and Real, we are getting into the fall season, with reenactments, harvest festivals, living history demonstrations, and the likes. Tour guide and founder Jeremy Sharp weaves through streets, back alleys, rows of historic buildings and the historically significant local cemetery. He has studied Dahlonega's history and has also worked with paranormal researchers using thermal cameras and other equipment to document sightings. This tour is approximately 1.3 miles long. Tours, all on paved, designated walkways, with the exception of Mount Hope Cemetery, end in front of the Visitors Center at 13 South Park Street. Historic Ghost Tour will be held every Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. http://www.dahlonegawalkingtours.com/ T / 706-482-8795 Current through November 30, 2015 Grapes and Ghosts Tour 19 East Main Street, Upstairs Porch, Dahlonega, GA, 30533 Sightings of Civil War soldiers playing cards in Mount Hope Cemetery, a ghostly little girl in a long white dress who plays in a room in the Historic District, ghosts who rattle dishes in restaurants on the Public Square, and chairs and chess pieces being moved when no one was there. The stories go on and on and are corroborated by town residents. Wine tours and pub crawls are about 1/2 mile long, and are indoors except when walking between stops. Allow 2 to 2 1/2 hours for tours. Drinks and tastings are purchased separately through the individual businesses. Adults only! ID required. $20 - Adults. Tickets may be pre-purchased online, through Facebook by email or by calling. We are on sight for ticket purchase about 1-2 hours before tours. Feb. 1- Andersonville First Saturday Programs Dec. 5, Overview 2015 During the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, park staff will conduct a series of programs on the first Saturday of each month. These programs will explore the events, conditions, or emotions of prisoners during the war. To expand the prisoner story, the park will also feature other Civil War prisons and draw on their stories to present a fuller picture of a soldier's life beyond the battlefield. Current - Once Collected Always Cherished highlights from the Greene and Spencer Jan Collections 10,2016 1251 Wynnton Road, Columbus, GA, 31906 The Columbus Museum recently acquired several items from the collection of the late Russell County Circuit Court Judge George Greene. An avid collector of local historical artifacts for decades, Greene served on the Museum's History Committee and applied a keen eye to capturing the rich heritage of the Chattahoochee Valley. Chief among these is an extensive archive related to the musician "Blind Tom" Wiggins, as well as several items related to the Civil War in Columbus. The museum is proud to unveil these 50 pieces as new and cherished additions to our collection. The exhibition also features maps from the J. Kyle Spencer Map Collection at the Columbus State University Archives. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA, 30122 This mile-long hike (easy to moderate) will lead to the five story ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester textile mill and focus on the history of the Sweetwater Creek Valley. This ranger-led hike will include going to the ruins and seeing the lovely whitewater rapids which provide great photo opportunities. The stories of this time told to Margaret Mitchell by her grandfather and many of the local people and places served as inspiration as she wrote Gone with the Wind. Living historians and tour guides in period dress will offer a glimpse into what life was like as the town was evacuated and Union soldiers arrived during the Battle of Jonesboro. Have your camps or Mechanized Cavalry Troops set up fundraising/recruiting tents. Large festivals and living history events can be very profitable for camps. Flags, hats, key chains, bottled water, etc. are great money making items for camp funds. Check with the event host for details on how to set up a vendor tent site.
