Nuri Bilge Ceylan - 2014 - Turkey - 3hr 16min Starring: Haluk Bilginer, Melisa Sözen, Demet Akbag In Turkish with English subtitles Aydin, a former actor, runs a small hotel in central Anatolia with his young wife Nihal, with whom he has a stormy relationship, and his sister Necla who is suffering after her recent divorce. In winter as the snow begins to fall, the hotel turns into a shelter but also an inescapable place that fuels their animosities. “An exquisitely photographed work of serious philosophical heft which tackles some knotty issues.” The Times Tuesday 28 July, 8pm LEVIATHAN (15) Dir. Andrey Zvyagintsev - 2014 - Russia - 2hr 20min Starring: Aleksey Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, Roman Madyanov In Russian with English subtitles In a Russian coastal town, Kolya is forced to fight the corrupt mayor when he is told that his house will be demolished. He recruits a lawyer friend to help, but the man's arrival brings further misfortune for Kolya and his family. “One of the outstanding films of 2014, Leviathan lives up to its title: it's a behemoth of intelligent contemporary cinema.” Film Comment Magazine www.electrictheatre.co.uk Wednesday 29 July, 8pm KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER (12A) Dir. David Zellner - 2014 - USA - 1hr 45min Starring: Rinko Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Katsube, Shirley Venard In the massive city of Tokyo, Kumiko lives in utter solitude. The only joy in her life comes from a grainy VHS tape of the American film Fargo. She is convinced that the treasure in the film is real and embarks on an incredible journey over the Pacific and through the frozen Minnesota wilderness to uncover a purported fortune. “A haunting, fantasy adventure for all ages in one of this century's most breathtaking independent films.” The Independent Thursday 30 July, 8pm THE LAST FIVE YEARS (15) Dir. Richard LaGravenese - 2014 - USA - 1hr 34min Starring: Anna Kendrick, Jeremy Jordan, Tamara Mintz The Last Five Years is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage. Taking place over a five year period, Jamie, a young, talented up-and-coming Jewish novelist falls in love with Cathy, a Shiksa Goddess and struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through song. “It's easy to fall in love with Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan in this heart-breaking musical two-hander, as they retrace a love affair from opposite ends.” Variety www.electrictheatre.co.uk Friday 31 July, 8pm WHIPLASH (15) Dir. Damien Chazelle - 2014 - USA - 1hr 47min Starring: Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, Melissa Benoist Andrew Neyman is an ambitious young jazz drummer. He hungers day and night to become one of the greats. Terence Fletcher, an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man's life. “Whiplash is superb: slick, authentic and infectious.” Film4 Saturday 1 August, 7.30pm MR TURNER (12A) Dir. Mike Leigh - 2014 - UK - 2hrs 30min Starring: Timothy Spall, Paul Jesson, Dorothy Atkinson Mr Turner explores the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turner. He forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, until his death. Throughout this period Turner travels, paints, visits brothels and is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
