It covers the period 1834 to 1837 inclusive. The present list has been prepared from the Diocesan Index now at the Lancashire Record Office. The original wills and administrations are preserved in the respective County Record Offices and the following entries are accordingly arranged under three headings, namely Lancashire, Cheshire and Welsh wills. The Act Books, also at the Lancashire Record Office, and original wills have only been consulted in exceptional circumstances. In general the method adopted for earlier volumes has been continued; the date of probate is restricted to year and month only and codicils are not recorded. The words 'parish of have however been included in this volume. All documents, unless otherwise designated, are wills or administrations with a will attached. 'Infra' wills (those proved in a lower court and filed separately) are indicated by an asterisk at the end of the entry. Wills which have not been found (25 in number) are here printed in italics. A list of the transcriber's abbreviations and indexes of places and occupa tions and miscellaneous items are given. Places are located according to the text and refer to the period 1834 to 1837. As will be seen, many of the smaller places are not yet engulfed by the larger towns. Occupations are generally arranged under the name of the product made or handled. Where an operator is common to more than one commodity, attention is drawn to this under the appropriate heading. The number of wills and administrations for the four-year period is 9,095 of which 900, i.e. about 10%, are proved in the 'Infra' court. Of the total number of wills and administrations, 76% refer to Lancashire estates, 23% to Cheshire and only 1% to Welsh ones. Attention is drawn to unusual features relating to wills noted in the Index of Occupations and Miscellaneous Items under 'Wills'. The transcriber is indebted to the staffs of the Lancashire and Cheshire Record Offices and of the National Library of Wales for their helpful assistance. This list of probate records is published with the approval of the Keeper of Public Records. vii ABBREVIATIONS A Administration Bond CO.
