Very interesting biography of the first Dr. Who, ...By Linda B. MccollumVery interesting biography of the first Dr. Who, written by his granddaughter. She combines her own memories with stories and information gained from her mother and other people who knew Hartnell. There are allusions to some of his less savory views on politics, but those are not very explicitly discussed.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A glimse into the life of the orginial Time LordBy Charlemagne I have been looking for this book for a long time. Fortunately, with the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special and the TV movie, Adventures In Space and Time, this biography has recently been updated and reissued.William Hartnell's granddaughter has taken great pains to piece together the life of her very private grandfather. Born to a poor, single mother during the Edwardian period, Hartnell was very ashamed of his history which included being left behind with relatives, bullied at school, and feeling that his mother never loved him. Most of the book covers Hartnell's career in movies and plays. There is some information about his personal and home life, but I was left wanting to know more. Some of the information about his time on Doctor Who was covered in the TV movie, and I would have liked to have read more stories about his time on the show, his appearance in The Three Doctors, and his wife's contribution to his legacy.I think Jessica Carney did her best to dig up information and interview the surviving people who knew him. There are many excellent pictures in the book and fans of British cinema will enjoy the backstories of several classic films. William Harnell's Doctor is definitely one of my top 3 favorites, and this is a good book to have in any Whovian's collection.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. William Hartnell - More than just The DoctorBy Phil RosenbachI have to give Jessica Carney, his granddaughter, applause, for compiling this informative book. I dare say that some parts of the book may be deemed as redundant, such as her extensive telling of his stage and film credits in the main part of the biography, which are later recapped in the appendix. But her insight to his private life as an illegitimate child, the positive mentor who greatly changed his life, and the way that William Hartnell was seen through the eyes of his granddaughter, as opposed to those who never personally knew the man, was what made this biography such a great book. Any reader should appreciate the fact that this isn't a book about William Hartnell's time on Doctor who, but his overall career. Additionally, a number of unrelated Doctor Who photographs of William Hartnell were an exceptional treat. The only thing lacking is that there were not more of these photographs, as well as personal anecdotes from former cast members. Many thanks to Jessica for giving us this insight into her grandfather's life. This is my review on the first edition. Since then, Jessica has had a second edition published, which is what is listed here. Hopefully, she has revised this second edition with more of what I previously mentioned. But even if she does not, I still highly recommend adding this book to your personal library. Sorely, not nearly enough copies of the first edition were printed to meet the demand of those who cherished the life and career of William Hartnell, but now, those who missed out the first time will have that opportunity with this publication. William Hartnell was a well-respected actor with a varied career behind him, which covered musical comedies, radio plays, 75 feature films and television dramas including "Doctor Who". This book contains previously unpublished photographs and reveals the life of this intensely private man.
