The property has been converted to create the sizable house it is today. Located close to the world famous Coast to Coast walk and Cleveland Way walks, it offers great potential for the international leisure business which could be developed by converting its large barn. Additionally, it is at the hub of a network of bridleways for the experienced horse rider. The Bilsdale Hunt is reputedly the oldest in the UK, starting in 1668. The house itself is constructed of herringbone cut stone elevations with inset timber windows and a traditional pantile roof and retains a wealth of character both externally and internally. The accommodation, which requires some updating and modernising, provides good living space with a sitting room, beamed dining room and further first floor sitting room. Elsewhere on the ground floor there is a study, kitchen with a solid fuel range (providing heating and hot water), utility room, and three bedrooms. The first floor is reached by three separate staircases. Historical Note The house, the hamlet of Urra and the beautiful valley of Bilsdale have been bypassed by most key historical events since the Conquest. The earliest record is of William and his small army engaged in the "Harrying of the North" having problems in the snow on the moor above Urra in the Winter of 1071. A century later the granting of the lands of Bilsdale to the Abbeys of Rievaulx and Kirkham followed by their success in the English wool business culminated in Henry VIII's decision for their dissolution in 1538. The monastery lands of Bilsdale were then sold to the Earl of Rutland and ultimately to the Lord Faversham and his family who held them until 1944. The first specific and detailed public record of Maltkiln House is in a major survey undertaken in 1642 and now in the Archives of North Yorkshire at Northallerton. Detailed maps show a large farm, house and buildings with field names and acreages unchanged until 1974 when the house and buildings were separated. In the Survey document the house is called "Reggett's House" for reasons not yet determined but perhaps because the resident was the estate overseer for the owner. The change to "Maltkiln" is also not yet clear but may be related to the intensive, adjacent Jet mining activity in the 1860's. Communications Maltkiln House is located off the B1257 which crosses the Moors from Helmsley to Stokesley with rapid access across the region to Thirsk, Middlesborough and Newcastle as well as linking to the A1(M) at Junction 51. Rail services in the area are excellent with high speed services to London Kings Cross on East Coast from Northallerton, Darlington and Middlesbrough. There are also services across the North East and Transpennine to Manchester. Location Chop Gate is a rural village at the top end of Bilsdale on the North side of the North York Moors, within easy reach of Yarm, Stokesley, Northallerton and the Tees Valley. The village itself is extremely pretty and benefits from a public house and primary school. Every day services are located in Stokesley where there is a comprehensive range of shops and services. There are numerous high quality state and fee paying schools close by, including Yarm School and Ampleforth College. The surrounding area and National Park offers numerous outdoor activities including many walks and trails, including the Coast to Coast and the Cleveland Way paths which pass close to the house. www.jackson-stops.co.uk Land and Outbuildings Enjoying an idyllic setting, Maltkin House has attractive mature gardens and grounds providing a mixture of formal lawned gardens to the side of the house as well as a private wooded area with a stream running through. There is an additional wooded area beyond the main gardens. Beyond the house and gardens there is a large partly two storey stone barn, roughly divided into three sections. The roof has been repaired recently and generally the building is in good condition and currently used for storage. This barn could, subject to the relevant consents, be converted to provide ancillary accommodation for the house or, even possibly a couple of holiday cottages or office space. We suggest that prospective buyers make their own enquires to the National Park Authority to obtain further guidance in relation to the planning options. Surrounding the barn are two grass areas; to the rear a small paddock, partly enclosed with dry stone walls and to the front of the barn a raised terraced area, lawn and the site of a former two storey granary, now mostly removed but possibly offering some further planning potential. The property sits on a loop road, which is gated and therefore there is little in the way of passing traffic. The road itself is owned and maintained by the local authority.
