Footy in the region has been hard fought over the years with some wonderful rivalries and many classic matches, both at junior and senior level. There have been many great players and umpires, colourful characters, con- troversial finals, some big representative wins, great clubs and a plethora of fantastic club and league volunteers many of whom will be recognised tonight. The selectors don’t profess to have got the selection absolutely spot on. As with most selection processes in footy there will be debate over who may have missed out but if there is any glaring omissions once the dust has settled then I’m sure they will be included next time. Importantly, the people involved in the selection process are confident that the people inducted deserve to be there. The inductees will have their name engraved on an honour board to be erect- ed at the Multi Sports Complex at Fishermans Road and if there is ultimately to be a team from the Coast representing the region in the QAFL competition then we would like to think that the inductees will automatically become as- sociate life members of that club. Shane Johnson AFL Queensland Message from AFLQ Chairman On behalf of AFL Queensland welcome to the Sunshine Coast Hall of Fame presentation dinner here at the magnificent Maroochy RSL club - a wonderful celebration of the achievements of the national code on the Sunshine Coast and a reunion for so many people that have been pivotal to the growth and development of the game in the region. Tonight will be the biggest formal gathering of the Sunshine Coast football family with around 400 people in attendance, some of whom have travelled as far as Broome in Western Australia and south from Port Lincoln. Tonight we will induct 130 players, coaches, umpires and volunteers all of whom have made significant contributions to the game at both junior and senior level on the Sunshine Coast spanning some 40 years. In addition an undisclosed number of individuals will be announced as “Legends of the Game.’ It promises to be a truly memorable night. Tonight is also a celebration of the game that we all love. It’s a celebration not only of the game on the Sunshine Coast but about the long and proud history of Australian Football in Queensland and to those that have helped us achieve some remarkable successes. On behalf of AFL Queensland I would like to thank all concerned with making tonight such a huge success and particularly to the Sunshine Coast Hall of Fame selection committee who had the daunting task of selecting our inductees and legends. On Saturday March 7th 1970 QAFL heavyweights Mayne and Morningside played at the Cooroy Showground in a promotional match using freshly cut saplings as goal posts. The rugby league people must have been worried because one of them had a light plane and he flew it over the ground during the game dropping flour bombs onto the arena! The ground had power lines across the ground which sagged and the footy would often hit them.
