Preseason Record Book BASEBALL • 2021 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Record Book BASEBALL • 2021 1976 (33-20-2) The Warrior baseball program gained full membership in the Far Western Conference and affiliation with the NCAA Division III to open its second decade of competition. With the top four pitchers return- ing, optimism ran high. The team returned from its Arizona trip with a 5-9 record in the midst of a six-game losing skid. The Warriors then began playing up to their po- tential and won 20 of the final 30 games on the schedule and were barely edged by UC Davis for the league title on the last day of the season. With a regular season record of 26-19, Stanislaus received another bid for postseason action. After opening the district playoff with a loss to Westmont College, the Warriors swept to seven consecutive come- from-behind wins to become the first-ever National Champion in Division III. The heart of the order (Dan Boer, Rusty Kuntz, Mel Anderson) was virtually unstoppable throughout the playoffs. Boer was honored as the MVP in the World Series and named first team All- American. 1977 (35-18-1) The 1977 Warriors are gener- ally regarded as the finest team in the history of the program on the basis of outstanding balance. Seven starters batted .294 or better, the pitching staff compiled a record-setting 2.69 ERA with seven shutouts and the defense fielded at a sparkling .955 clip. The team repeated as conference runner- up and closed the year with 10 straight wins. With a 29-18 regular season record, the Warriors earned a trip to the West Regionals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which coincidentally was coach Jim Bowen’s hometown. These Warriors were at their best in postseason play, devastating the regional oppositions with three one-sided victories (wins of 20-2, 10-4 and 22-1). The competition stiffened at the World Series, but three more consecutive wins brought CSU Stanislaus its second consecutive national championship. Leadoff man Rusty Kuntz — who batted .397 with 79 hits, 64 runs, 14 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases during the season — was named World Series MVP and earned first team All-American honors. 2 Preseason (4.14.20) Stanislaus State University Record Book POSTSEASON BASEBALL • 2021 POSTSEASON RESULTS 2008 NCAA DII REGIONALS Overall NCAA Postseason Record: 49-24 Cal State Stanislaus qualified for the NCAA Division II West Region- 1975 Nationals, at Marietta, Ohio als for the first time in program history after setting a school record NAIA Regionals Glassboro St. (N.J.) 4, Warriors 3 Azusa Pacific 5, Warriors 4 Marietta 5, Warriors 3 with 37 wins and a 1-2 showing at the CCAA tournament. 1976 1979 The No. 4-seeded Warriors opened with host and sixth-ranked Chi- NCAA Division III National Champions NCAA Division III, 2nd Place co State and lost to the Wildcats in a pitching dual.
