It is a matter of immense pleasure to present to you the Annual Report of the University of Allahabad for the year 2012-2013. This Report has been prepared as part of a statutory requirement and also to assess the progress of the University with regard to efficiency of services and achievements towards its mission. It aims at highlighting the areas of strength and also making a close scrutiny of the weaknesses of the University in order to review its policies for drawing up a future roadmap for optimal performance and for setting the direction for the future. I hope the Report will serve as a guiding post in formulating strategies for the coming years. Steadfast to its noble mission of pursuit, advancement and generation of knowledge underlining the exploration of their intersection and frontiers, the University has carved a niche for itself among the institutions of higher learning in India and abroad. Conceived with the motto ‘Quot Rami Tot Arbores’ (‘As Many Branches So Many Trees’), this University has been the fountainhead of many a great institution of excellence emerging as its offshoots and presently interspersed among Central India, Vidarbha region, Bihar, West Bengal, U.P. and Rajasthan. The uniqueness of this great seat of learning down the ages also lies in the purposeful contribution that it has made to the mammoth task of nation building. Organized in Faculties, Institutes, Centres, Constituent Colleges and several other academic and research units, the University conducts high-end academic and research activities in several areas of human concern and curiosity, also including courses relevant in today’s fast changing scenario in the realm of knowledge and societal needs. The University is making rapid strides to meet the challenges of higher education in modern times. It has initiated a relentless march towards the true summation of its social and academic endeavours. It has been through sheer unflagging commitment to excellence that the University has marched on the path of progress yielding rich scholastic dividends. Academic ambience of the highest order, and research and teaching of the unwavering paradigm for full realization of one’s potential have been the main drivers of the success story of the University. We derive satisfaction in sharing with you the resolve that the University has made to establish synchrony between the University and the rest of the world - with the changing scenario in the realm of higher education in the wake of globalization and liberalization. We feel elated about the all-round progress that the University has made during the year being covered in this report. Various important and indeed much-needed initiatives taken in the previous year for enhancing faculty strength, academics, research & development activities, innovation and out-reach activities, improving students’ amenities and welfare, faculty and staff welfare activities, development of various infra-structures, enhanced use of ICT, streamlining and modernization of admission, examination, overall governance, and numerous other measures taken for efficient and effective functioning of the University have given a great fillip to achieving the goal of excellence in all of our pursuits. However, challenges still persist. Despite these challenges, we are very hopeful of achieving expeditious growth and the set goals. We feel that for the full realization of University’s vision and mission, all stakeholders must champion its cause without any prejudice or parochial considerations. Hence, we would like to call upon all concerned to engage with us to innovate towards new solutions, which are in sync with 21st century requirement and work setting and that focus on affordability, scalability and sustainability. I would like to thank and express my profound gratitude to the Hon’ble Visitor, Rector and Chancellor for their support, encouragement, leadership, guidance, and vision in this exciting journey and in realizing our ambitious agenda. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Members of the Executive and Academic Councils, Finance Committee and a number of other internal statutory bodies for their guidance and support. I would also like to offer thanks to the officials and the staff of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the University Grants Commission and the local District Administration for their cooperation and support. I take this opportunity also to place on record my sincere appreciation of the untiring efforts of the faculty members, officials, staff and students of the University towards achieving the desired goals, their support and cooperation and effort in building a team spirit. I also thank the University community elsewhere for their concern about the University and offering valuable suggestions, guidance and anchorage. We share our immense pleasure at the completion of 125 eventful years of the glorious history of the University. At this juncture, we are filled with a sense of pride and fulfilment by becoming part of this unique institution of higher education. On this memorable event, continuing our inexorable march towards becoming the global best, we re-dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly with renewed vigour and commitment to help the University attain even loftier heights in the coming years.
