Digital Social Studies Lesson Name: Kent Walchuk Date: Spring 2020 Discipline: Social Studies Grade Level: 3-5 Topic: Geographic Representation Lesson Focus: - Canadian Provinces, Territories, and Capital Cities Standard(s): - G.3_5.1 Construct maps, graphs, and other representations of both familiar and unfamiliar places. Objective(s): - Students will locate the thirteen Canadian provinces and territories, as well as their capital cities, on a map. Assessment: - Students will have an adult assess their final maps at the end of the lesson (use Prezi as a reference) Materials: - Computer - Printer - Prezi https://prezi.com/view/UblD3hABHw8UZOpsmdbt/ - Blank Map of Canada - Pencil - Pencil Crayons/Crayons Procedure: (Students will follow along with the Prezi) - Students will use Prezi to learn about the 13 provinces, territories, and capital cities of Canada. 1) British Columbia 2) Alberta 3) Saskatchewan 4) Manitoba 5) Ontario 6) Quebec 7) Newfoundland & Labrador 8) New Brunswick 9) Prince Edward Island 10) Nova Scotia 11) Yukon 12) Northwest Territories 13) Nunavut - Once students successfully go through all 13 slides, they will then click on the scavenger hunt tab - Students will then get (or print off) a copy of the “Blank Canada Map” and fill in the corresponding provinces/territories (Bonus for adding capital cities) - Next, students will complete the “Canadian Scavenger Hunt” and add the 13 clues to their map! - Once completed, students will have their very own map of Canada that includes all the provinces, territories, capital cities, and a visual to help them remember them. - Next, students will watch “The Ultimate Travel Guide – Canada” which will provide them with more knowledge about Canada and tie in many things learned throughout the lesson. - Social Studies Skill Builder Activity: Lastly, students will play the Canadian provinces/territories and capital cities games. This is an interactive way to showcase what they have learned throughout the lesson. The objective is to locate the location of the provinces/territories and capital cities on an interactive map Modification/Differentiation: - If students do not have access to a printer to print off the blank map of Canada, they can just take notes about each province/territory in a personal notebook or piece of paper.
