Honorary Professors are for this reason not included. There are two Heads of School (Birkbeck & Kent) and one Dean (Wolverhampton). Five hold an MBE; one has a CBE and DBE. The Black female Professors are engaged across 25 different areas in 45 (out of 164)2 HEI’s. The top three are Law (11) followed by Education (10) and Health and Nursing (9). The full breakdown is as follows: Anthropology (1); Art & Design (3); Biology (1); Business, Management & Organisation (9); Development (4); Economics (7); Education (10); Engineering (2); Film & TV (1); Geography (3); Health & Nursing (8); History (1); Law (11); Literature & Creative Writing (7); Math (1); Media, Communications & Informatics (4); Medicine (4); Pharmacy (2); Physics (2); Psychology (2); Politics (3); Science (4); Social Work & Social Policy (3); Sociology & Social Science (7). According to HESA data, there are around 350 Black female professors in the UK, out of a total number of 18,000 professors across the UK, meaning that Black women make up less than 2% of the professoriate in Higher Education. Only five HEI’s have five or more Black female professors: Warwick (12); UCL (8); Royal Holloway (6) and Manchester (6) and Kings College London (5). Most Russell Group3 universities have just one or, even worse, none. The data suggests that some HEI’s are doing better than others but that overall there is much room for improvement. 1 Women of African, Asian and Caribbean origin and descent. 2 http://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/facts-and-stats/Pages/higher-education-data.aspx . 3 This group of 25 research intensive Universities includes: Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Imperial, Kings College London, Leeds, Liverpool, LSE, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Queen Mary, Queens University Belfast, Sheffield, Southampton, UCL, Warwick and York. 3 Institutional Distribution Bedfordshire 1 Birkbeck 2 Birmingham 1 Bradford 2 Brighton 1 Brunel 3 Cambridge 1 Cardiff 1 Dundee 1 East London 2 Edge Hill 1 Essex 1 Glasgow 2 Goldsmiths 3 Greenwich 1 Huddersfield 1 Institute of Education 1 Kent 2 Keele 1 Kings College London 5 Leeds 2 Leeds Beckett 2 Leeds Trinity 1 Liverpool John Moores 2 LSE 1 London South Bank 1 Manchester 6 Newcastle 1 Nottingham 1 Oxford 3 Plymouth 3 Queen Mary 2 Reading 2 Royal Holloway 7 School of Advanced Studies 1 School of Oriental and African Studies 3 Sheffield Hallam 1 Southampton 1 South Wales 1 Staffordshire 1 Suffolk 1 Sunderland 1 Surrey 1 Sussex 2 University of the Arts 1 University College London 8 UCLAN 1 Warwick 12 4 West London 1 Wolverhampton 2 5 Anthropology Raminder Kaur Professor of Anthropology & Cultural Studies University of Sussex [email protected] http://www.sussex.ac.uk/profiles/158815 6 Art and Design Sonia Boyce Chair of Black Art and Design University of the Arts [email protected] http://www.arts.ac.uk/research/ual-staff-researchers/a-z/professor-sonia-boyce/ Chuham Jagjit Professor of Art and Design Liverpool John Moores University [email protected] https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/about-us/staff-profiles/faculty-of-arts-professional-and-social- studies/liverpool-school-of-art-and-design/jagjit-chuhan 7 Lubaina Himid Professor of Contemporary Art UCLAN [email protected] http://www.uclan.ac.uk/staff_profiles/lubaina_himid.php 8 Biology Eriko Takano Professor of Synthetic Biology Manchester University [email protected] https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/eriko.takano.html 9 Business, Management & Accounting Nelarine Cornelius Professor of Organisation Studies Queen Mary, University of London [email protected] http://www.busman.qmul.ac.uk/staff/corneliusn.html Donna Chambers Professor of Tourism University of Sunderland [email protected] https://www.sunderland.ac.uk/research/researchstaffprofiles/facultyofbusinesslaw/profdonnac hambers/ 10 Irene Ng Professor of Marketing and Service Systems Warwick University [email protected] https://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/people/profile/?wmgid=849 Gloria Agyemang Professor of Accounting and Head of School (Management) [email protected] Royal Holloway University of London https://pure.royalholloway.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/gloria-agyemang(b2e0c74b-49e6-44e4-b243- d30e022f3900).html 11 Alice Lam Professor of Organisational Studies Royal Holloway University London [email protected] https://pure.royalholloway.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/alice-lam_bd6b870a-eb76-41bc-9b2b- eee97aa8351a.html Sukanya Sen Gupta Professor of Management Royal Holloway University of London [email protected] https://pure.royalholloway.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/sukanya-sen-gupta(c28e2c2f-b2f1-41ca- bebe-654ec83e2b56).html 12 Salima Paul Professor of Credit Management Plymouth University [email protected] https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/staff/salima-paul Shaofeng Liu Professor of Operations Management and Decision Making Plymouth University [email protected] https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/staff/shaofeng-liu 13 Jingjing Xu Professor of Maritime Law and Economics & Associate Dean of Research Plymouth University [email protected] https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/staff/jingjing-xu 14 Development Uma Kothari Professor of Migration and Postcolonial Studies Manchester University [email protected] http://www.manchester.ac.uk/research/uma.kothari/ Bina Agarwa Professor of Development Economics and Environment Manchester University [email protected] http://www.manchester.ac.uk/research/bina.agarwal/
