DECEMBER 2020 Volume 12 Number 8 Zoom Video Conference - December 8, 2020 9:30am - 12:00pm Check your email for link to the meeting. Program - David Owen Hastings Exploring Nature with Paper and Stitch David Owen Hastings grew up in a household of creatives. At an early age, using his grandmother’s 1950’s Singer, he made clothes for his platoon of GI Joes. As an artist, he uses this same machine to stitch together the paper- based collages which he has created and shown in galleries for over 20 years. David noted in an interview in Creating Whimsey that he almost always stitches on paper during the collage process as it provides a structural function (no waiting for glue to dry) as well as a linear element. His work is abstract, inspired by the patterns, shapes, colors, and textures in nature. Plants and leaves, microorganisms, and weathered surfaces are influences as well as Japanese art and culture. His lecture, Exploring Nature with Paper and Stitch, will discuss his inspirations and creative process. He will show examples and include details for those who wish to try his techniques. With a life-long love of textiles, sewing, and knitting, it was almost inevitable that David would turn to quilting. He will talk about how his experience as a gallery artist led to the world of modern quilting. David Owen Hastings is a quilter, graphic designer, print and textile artist, and the 2020 President of the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. Sharing knowledge, encouraging creativity, and teaching new skills are his personal passions. He also loves to travel, especially in Asia, and enjoys sharing his experiences and inspiration through travel photos and stories. For more, go to: davidowenhastings.com. One tradition is that my daughter insists that everyone must wear an ugly Christmas sweater. Since I did not own such a thing, I had to get one. I found this lovely example on Amazon—tomato red and lime green with stars, stripes, and other designs. I ordered it in my usual size, thinking that even if it was ugly, it should at least fit properly. However, the sweater I received was five sizes too large! I was going to return it but decided that its bagginess just adds to its ugliness. Now it is my go-to sweater on Christmas Day! Regardless of your faith, tradition, or how you celebrate this time of year, my wish is that you have a safe, healthy, and happy season and a good start to 2021. Parliamentarian - Monica Shafer Needed: Nominating Committee for 2021-2022 Executive Board Positions December is here and 2020 is coming to a close. (Thank goodness!) In the new year, we will look forward to the board turnover in May. We need to begin to plan who will be nominated to fill these positions. During the December General Meeting, I will ask for five volunteers—not currently on the executive board—to help draw up a list of possible candidates. In April, membership will vote on the five nominees to fill the 2021-2022 executive board positions of President, 1st VP Programs, 2nd VP Membership, 3rd VP Facilities, Secretary, and Treasurer. Philanthropy - Linda Chiu & Nancy Pestal In October, a small group was given access to the church and was able to collect fabric for quilt backs as well as to cut batting. We also offered a fat quarter sale and made over $150. (Obviously, we all had cabin fever and needed to get out of the house.) Thank you for your support! We will provide pillowcases for military children but, sad to say, their Christmas event was cancelled. Thanks to those who made pillowcases; we collected over 50! In November, we delivered 35 quilts to Meals on Wheels in Dana Point. We had planned to have another fat quarter and magazine sale at the church but that had to be postponed. Please contact us if we can deliver any kits or fabric to you. We sure appreciate your help! Happy sewing!
