The Parish Church of the Holy Saviour Sugley Requiem Mass !1 A prayer to Christ in preparation for Holy Communion Of your mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not tell of the Mystery to your enemies; I will not give you a kiss, like Judas; but like the Thief I confess you: Remember me, Lord, in your Kingdom. !2 WELCOME & INTRODUCTION ✠ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. The Lord be with you. All And also with you. The priest introduces the service and invites the people to confess their sins God has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of his glory in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. As we acknowledge our human frailty, we call to mind our sins of word, deed and omission, and confess them before God our Father. You raise the dead to life in the Spirit: Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. You bring pardon and peace to the broken in heart: Christ, have mercy. All Christ, have mercy. You make one by your Spirit the torn and divided: Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. The priest pronounces the absolution, assuring the people of God’s love and forgiveness May almighty God have mercy upon us ✠ forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life. All Amen. !3 THE COLLECT The priest says a prayer in which we focus our minds for this particular service Eternal God, our maker and redeemer, grant us, with all the faithful departed, the sure benefits of your Son’s saving passion and glorious resurrection that, in the last day, when you gather up all things in Christ, we may with them enjoy the fullness of your promises; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. Please sit down THE LITURGY OF THE WORD A reading fom ‘Wisdom’ or ‘Romans’ is heard, folowed by the Psalm A reading fom the book ‘Wisdom’ But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-o#ering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. Wisdom 3. 1-9 For the Word of the Lord All Thanks be to God. !4 A reading fom St Paul’s Letter to the Church at Rome Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our su#erings, knowing that su#ering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person$though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5. 1-11 For the Word of the Lord All Thanks be to God. This response to the psalm is used ℟ Wait for the Lord and he shal comfort your heart The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? ℟ When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though a host encamp against me, my heart shall not be afraid, and though there rise up war against me, yet will I put my trust in him. ℟ One thing have I asked of the Lord and that alone I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, !5 to behold the fair beauty of the Lord and to seek his will in his temple. ℟ For in the day of trouble he shall hide me in his shelter; in the secret place of his dwelling shall he hide me and set me high upon a rock. ℟ I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and he shall comfort your heart; wait patiently for the Lord. The Lord be with you. All And also with you. ✠ Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John. All Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said: ‘Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’ John 6. 37-40 This is the Gospel of the Lord.
