The GVCA Climate Action Challenge Update The meeting on January 26 inspired many Guildwoodians into action On Sunday January 26, several dozen local residents attended the GVCA’s Climate Change Conversation at Scarborough Village Recreation Centre. City staff from TransformTO presented an overview of what the City of Toronto is doing to combat climate change and deal with waste reduction and the environment. One of the more surprising revelations was that more than half of the harmful emissions in Toronto come from buildings, not from vehicles. And in the building category, more than half of the buildings that cause greenhouse gas emissions are residential, not commercial or industrial. After the City’s presentation, each of the seven tables discussed what they could do as individuals and what we can do as a community to reduce carbon emissions and protect our environment. Each table then presented their ideas, and we will be publishing more on these in future editions of the GVCA E-News and the News & Views, as well as on the GVCA website. See the article below to find out how you can get involved. New Green Group in Guildwood The conversation about making Guildwood greener covers a lot of ideas! Some of the attendees at the Climate Change Coversation were so inspired that they decided to start a green group in Guildwood! Green Guildwood is a new initiative to unite Guildwood residents in combatting climate change right here in our own community. Through education opportunities, knowledge sharing, special events, and advocacy efforts, Green Guildwood strives to inspire and empower everyone to take action through small changes, big ideas, and everything in between. For more information about Green Guildwood and how you can get involved, email [email protected]. Another new green group that has started in Scarborough-Guildwood is Green Neighbours 24 (GN24) which is part of the Green Neighbours Network. More information on our local GN24 is available here. Guildwood Village Community Association will be hosting its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, March 24 at the Guild Inn beginning at 7 pm. In keeping with our normal format, the business portion of the AGM will be held first, followed by an informative session for the community. This year we'll feature "The Guildwood Village Community Showcase." To this end we are highlighting people and groups in our neighbourhood who are doing things that make Guildwood great. We plan to start with brief presentations from the students of schools in our community about the things they are doing to make Guildwood a great place to live. We will then move on to a brief panel discussion with two or three community groups to better understand how each contributes to the overall community. So we will be asking questions like: What does the group do and how does that impact the quality of life in Guildwood? What inspired the participants to get involved with or to initiate the group? What were the key steps to getting the group started. Following the panel discussion, we will make tables available to people and groups doing good work in or for the community so that they can share information about their cause and build greater community engagement. The tables are intended to work like a job fair or trade show, with interested people meeting with people doing interesting things in the community. We will be serving light snacks following the meeting and we are also intending to have a cash wine service available for members to enjoy as they tour the showcase. Guildwood Day Planning Has Begun! Is it too early to be thinking about June? Not a chance! Guildwood Day will be on June 6 and plans are already beginning to take shape. The theme for this year’s event is “Planet Guildwood” to reflect our goal of protecting the environment. In keeping with the theme, we will not provide any single-use bottled water on site. Sponsor Dee Peroff is arranging for a water truck and refillable containers will be provided. Also keeping with our theme, we are encouraging all our parade participants to use zero emission vehicles and floats. We encourage schools to participate in the parade using the day’s theme. In addition to the annual parade, Guildwood residents can look forward to our traditional events, including games for kids and a vendor fair after the parade along with a BBQ lunch, and an evening BBQ with more fun and entertainment. We'll have more details and a schedule available in coming weeks. To get involved in this year's Guildwood Day as a volunteer or sponsor, please contact: [email protected]. We are especially in need of volunteers to help out with the children's games.
