We are all experiencing COVID-19, the pandemic that has significantly impacted all of us. AI hope and pray that you and your loved ones are staying safe, and that those of you who need help get it as quickly as possible. We have also experienced changes here, at the MESSAGE University of Alberta Hospital, and, even closer to home, at the University Hospital Foundation. Thank you to each and every one of you who contributed FROM to the Brain Centre Campaign. The campaign wrapped up last September after raising an incredible $70 million, changing brain care dramatically for thousands of Albertans OUR and western Canadians. The researchers that your generosity supports – such as Dr. Glen Jickling who is moving closer and closer to developing a blood test that will diagnose a stroke within PRESIDENT minutes, and Dr. Jack Jhamandas, whose research in Alzheimer’s disease may one day restore the memory in patients living with that terrible condition – stand to transform & CEO brain care for millions around the world. Your donations supported a $10 million gift to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in celebration of its tenth anniversary. These funds are already being put to valuable use in upgrading equipment and technology that is used THE ONE CONSTANT every day in diagnosing and caring for cardiac patients across western Canada, and beginning an Innovation Fund to inspire WE CAN ALWAYS more research and advancements in cardiac care. You also gave Angelena Dolezar, a young Edmonton COUNT ON IS CHANGE school teacher who lost her leg in a terrifying boating accident, her life back by funding osseointegration surgery – the most advanced procedure in the world for attaching prosthetic limbs. Finally, there is the change that brought me here. My predecessor, Joyce Mallman Law, retired last fall. Her belief in the power of philanthropy to change and save lives lifted the University Hospital Foundation to great heights. As your new CEO, my passion will propel us forward, and create an environment of discovery and innovation that will be heard – and have impact – around the world. And so I say thank you for making 2019-2020 an outstanding year for patient care, research and innovation at the University of Alberta Hospital. Your gifts made it possible for our medical teams to keep more families together, and to restore the ability in patients to do what so many of us take for granted – such as walking without pain, breathing without effort and living independently. The year 2019-2020 was another successful fundraising year for the University Hospital Foundation (UHF). More importantly, this fundraising success led to the second highest amount FROM in distributions in UHF’s history, to support the work of the University of Alberta Hospital, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. OUR These distributions enabled the Foundation to purchase state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment that have and will continue to have positive impacts on patient outcomes. The Foundation also contributed to leading BOARD research into the causes and treatment of diseases that are treated each and every day at the Hospital. Funds were used to support important clinical and equipment needs and innovative medical research, including research into new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. BRAIN CENTRE CAMPAIGN Thanks to your generosity, Edmonton is home to world-class brain care ess than a decade ago, creating a Brain Centre at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) was an idea that L needed one essential element if it had any chance to succeed – community support. Eight years and $70 million later, the University Hospital Foundation’s Brain Centre Campaign ended last fall with a celebration that honoured the donors who made it happen: the campaign’s leadership team, led by co-chairs and prominent Edmonton-based philanthropists, Jim Brown and Guy Scott; and the medical teams that can now save and change the lives of more brain patients than ever before. “We made a promise to bring the best brain care to Edmonton and we’ve done it,” said Brown. “The people of this great city showed once again that, thanks to their generosity, anything is possible,” added Scott. For brain patients, and their families, the advancements in brain care have brought more than just hope when it comes to fighting some of the most complex and challenging health conditions of our time – they’re also getting the life-saving care they need sooner, recovering faster and living their lives with far fewer limitations. “There is almost nothing we can’t do for brain and spinal conditions at the University of Alberta Hospital, thanks to donors
