KERRY Former Secretary of State John Kerry will receive the ASF Gold Medal. Mr. Kerry served as the United States’ 68th Secretary of State, assuming office in February 2013. During his tenure at the State Department, Mr. Kerry was a respected global leader on a wide range of international issues, including nuclear proliferation, climate change, and humanitarian crises. Mr. Kerry was also responsible for spearheading the 2016 Nordic Summit and has served as chairman of the Arctic Council. Mr. Kerry began his career in Massachusetts government as a prosecutor in Middlesex County. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1982 and to the U.S. Senate two years later. Mr. Kerry served five terms in the Senate until his appointment as Secretary of State. BENGT HOLMSTRÖM 2016 Nobel laureate Bengt R. Holmström will receive the ASF Award for Distinguished Public Service. Dr. Holmström is a microeconomic theorist who is the Paul A. Samuelson Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Born in Finland, Dr. Holmström maintains strong ties to both parts of the world. He received his B.S. in mathematics and science from the University of Helsinki, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. Dr. Holmström received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in December 2016. LINDA NORDBERG The first ASF Niels Poulson Award, recognizing outstanding dedication and service by a member of the Board of Trustees, will be presented to Linda Nordberg. Elected as an Executive Trustee in 1991, Mrs. Nordberg has been a member of the Executive Committee since 1994, and has served as Vice Chairman for the U.S. as well as Vice Chairman for Finland. Over the years, Mrs. Nordberg has actively participated on many Board committees. In addition, she has served as Board President and Trustee of the Katonah Museum of Art. THE AMERICAN-SCANDINAVIAN FOUNDATION The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) promotes firsthand exchange of intellectual and creative influence between the United States and the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. A publicly supported American nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, ASF has an extensive program of fellowships, grants, intern/trainee sponsorship, publishing, and cultural activities. ASF has over 10,000 members and supporters. Its journal, Scandinavian Review, published since 1913, is read by subscribers worldwide. Over the past ten years, ASF awarded over $10 million in fellowships to scholars, artists, and professionals. ASF is headquartered in New York City at Scandinavia House, The Nordic Center in America, created to promote the artistic and intellectual influence of the Nordic countries through exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, reading, lectures, and children’s programs.
