PREVIEW Ladies’ SUPER G – Thursday 14 Mar 2019 Super-G crystal globe • Three skiers are still in contention for the ladies' super-G crystal globe: Mikaela Shiffrin (300 points), Tina Weirather (268), and Nicole Schmidhofer (253). • Shiffrin has already secured the overall and slalom crystal globe this season. She is also still in the running for the super-G and giant slalom crystal globe. Only two women have won four World Cup standings in one season: Lindsey Vonn (2010, 2012) and Tina Maze (2013). • Maze is also the last woman to win a crystal globe in a technical and speed event in the same year as she won the super-G and giant slalom standings in 2013. • No alpine skier, male or female, has ever won the overall, slalom, giant slalom and super-G crystal globes in one year. • Weirather (2017, 2018) can become the fifth woman to win the super-G crystal globe at least three times, after Vonn (5), Katja Seizinger (5), Carole Merle (4) and Renate Götschl (3). • Vonn (4, 2009-2012), Seizinger (4, 1993-1996) and Merle (4, 1989-1992) are the only women to win the ladies' super-G classification at least three seasons in a row. • Schmidhofer could become the first Austrian woman since Götschl in 2007 to win the super-G crystal globe. • Coming into the races in Soldeu, Schmidhofer is also in contention for the downhill crystal globe. Five women have won the downhill and super-G standings in the same year of which Vonn was the last to do so in 2015. Mikaela ShiFFrin • Mikaela Shiffrin has won all super-G races she has participated in this season: the World Cup races in Lake Louise, St. Moritz and Cortina d'Ampezzo, and the race at the World Championships in Åre. • Shiffrin could become the fifth woman to win a women's record four World Cup super-G races in one season, after Lindsey Vonn, Lara Gut-Behrami, Renate Götschl and Katja Seizinger. Vonn was the last to achieve this in 2014/15. • On Saturday, Shiffrin became the first skier, male or female, to win 15 World Cup races in a single season, breaking the record set by Vreni Schneider in 1988/89. • Shiffrin has won 58 World Cup races in total, fifth-most among men and women. Annemarie Moser-Pröll is in fourth place on 62 victories. Weirather and Schmidhofer • Tina Weirather has won seven career World Cup super-G races, as many as Alexandra Meissnitzer. She needs one more win to equal Hilde Gerg (8) in seventh place all-time. Information provided by • Weirather has collected 21 World Cup podiums in the super-G, one shy of Anna Veith (22) in sixth place all-time among women. • Nicole Schmidhofer won the last World Cup super-G race, in Garmisch- Partenkirchen. It was her first World Cup win in the super-G. • Schmidhofer can become the first Austrian woman to win successive super-G events in the World Cup since Renate Götschl in December 2006. • Götschl was also the last Austrian woman to win multiple World Cup super- G races in a season as she won four in 2006/07. Other contenders • Sofia Goggia has finished on the podium in each of her last three super-G races. She won the World Cup race in Åre last season, finished second in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen World Cup this season and took silver at this year's World Championships in Åre. • Goggia has won two World Cup super-G races, equal to Federica Brignone and Deborah Compagnoni. Only Karen Putzer (4) and Isolde Kostner (3) have won more among Italian women. • Corinne Suter won the bronze medal in the super-G at this year's World Championships. Her best result in a World Cup super-G race is a sixth place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in January 2019. • Viktoria Rebensburg has claimed two World Cup victories in this event, in Schladming in 2012 and in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2013. Four German women have won more: Seizinger (16), Hilde Gerg (8), Marina Kiehl (6) and Maria Höfl-Riesch (3).
