THE UCM MULTIPURPOSE BUILDING Considered one the finest facilities of its kind in the nation, the Multipurpose Building is in its 36th year of service to the university. The $5.5 million facility was The Jennies built at no expense to the state of Missouri, as financing was accomplished solely through student fees. at the Multi The “Multi” truly lives up to its name, as it is one (since 1987) of the busiest places on campus. In addition to being Year Record Pct the home of Jennies volleyball, Mules and Jennies 1987 10-0 1.000 basketball, indoor track & field, and Mules wrestling, 1988 17-1 .944 the facility is used by University students, faculty, and 1989 12-1 .923 staff, as well as the general public. Designed primarily for recreational use, the 1990 12-0 1.000 building features a spacious main arena with a six- 1991 10-4 .714 lane track, a swimming pool, five indoor and two 1992 9-2 .818 outdoor handball/racquetball courts, areas for free 1993 12-1 .923 and universal weights, an activities area, locker rooms, 1994 14-1 .933 meeting rooms, and offices for UCM’s Intercollegiate 1995 10-0 1.000 Athletics staff. The main arena can accommodate four 1996 10-5 .667 basketball or six volleyball courts at one time or all of 1997 10-1 .909 the events for an indoor track meet. Seating capacity in the Multipurpose Building is 1998 3-1* .750 up to 6,000 for basketball and volleyball, making it 1999 10-0 1.000 the largest such facility in the MIAA. It also seats 1,640 2000 12-3 .800 fans for indoor track meets and 11,000 people for 2001 10-2 .833 concerts. 2002 9-3 .750 The Multi underwent a major renovation during the 2003 12-1 .923 summer of 1998. An inlaid-wood floor was installed in 2004 10-1 .909 the main arena, replacing most of the original Tartan 2005 11-3 .786 surface and eliminating the need for the portable- wood floor that had been used for basketball since 2006 11-2 ..846 1988, while the running track was resurfaced and new 2007 9-3 .750 jumping and vaulting pits were created for track & field. 2008 13-2 .867 Coming during the 2008 season was new bleachers on both the north and south sides of the arena. 2009 14-2 .875 Numerous special events take place in the Multi each year. It hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s 2010 17-1 .944 state volleyball tournament from 1988 to 2008, while state high school playoff games for basketball are still played 2011 16-1 .941 annually in the building. Total 283-41 .873 In addition, the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are contested every other year in the Multipurpose Building. * - Jennies went 7-0 in Garrison Gym while the The facility is also used for UCM’s commencement ceremonies and for concerts. Multi was undergoing renovations. The Jennies have played the majority of their home matches in the Multipurpose Building since 1987. During that time, they have compiled an impressive 236-37 home record (.864) and have hosted six NCAA Tournaments, including the Division II Elite Eight in 1996. The first basketball game was played in the Multi on November 27, 1976, when the Mules defeated Midland Lutheran College 92-75. The Jennies played their first basketball contest in the building on December 8 of that season, dropping a 66-44 decision to Tarkio College. The Jennies basketball team posted its first win in the facility on Jan. 7, 1977, with a 76-42 victory over Grand View College. The Multi was formally dedicated eight days later as the Mules beat Southwest Missouri State 90-62. Millie Barnes Athletic Weight Training Facility The Barnes Athletic Weight Training Facility was dedicated on October 26, 2001, and is designated solely for use by Central Missouri female student-athletes. Complete with cardiovascular machines and state-of-the-art weight training equipment, the facility ensures the Jennies have one of the finest strength and conditioning complexes in all of NCAA Division II athletics. The Facility is named in honor of Dr. Mildred “Millie” Barnes, a long-time Jennies coach and UCM physical education professor. Jennies Volleyball Locker Room In 2009 the Jennies’ locker room underwent renovations. New wooden lockers replaced the old style metal cages. New carpet and fresh paint, as well as a DVD player and flat panel T.V. for film watching, completed the comfortable feel Coach Piontek wants for his players. The accommodations also include 2 private showers and a couch. Named head coach before the 2009 season, after 23 years as the Jennies assistant coach, Piontek has guided the program to back-to-back NCAA Regional championships and three straight MIAA titles. In three seasons, Piontek has recorded a 96-15 career record, and a 53-5 mark in conference play, the best MIAA record over the past three seasons. Piontek has seen 13 players earn AVCA All-American honors, and 20 All- MIAA Team selections. In 2011, three Jennies were named to the AVCA All-American First Team. Allie Huffman was named the MIAA Player of the Year, the first Jennie to earn the award since 1999. Last season, the Jennies made their second consecutive NCAA Elite Eight Piontek with his wife, former Jennies All-American Stacy Piontek. appearance after claiming the NCAA South Central Regional title on their home court. He also served as a line judge during the beach volleyball competition at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. This summer, Piontek, along with Championship Productions, produced an instructional video, Drills for Maximizing Your Team’s Offense. The video highlights the offensive side of Piontek’s fast-paced practices. Piontek earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the Air Force Academy in 1975.
