Spettacolo barocco! Theatre‘s triumph March 3rd, 2016 - January 30th, 2017 Lobkowitzplatz 2, 1010 Wien [email protected] T +43 1 525 24 5315 MARCH 2016 About the exhibition No other art form was more suitable to translate the spectacular show effects of the baroque era than theatre. Innovative artists like Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini or the Galli Bibiena family created the stage designs, unparalleled until today. The Theatermuseum holds numerous works of those illusionist masters and presents some of them for the first time. Theatre and its dramatic staging was the baroque period‘s art form par excellence uniting language, image and music into one major artwork. The sovereigns of the 17th and 18th century knew how to stage themselves with theatrical processions, grand opera performances and opulent equestrian ballets. The Theatermuseum‘s stage and costume designs range from quick sketches to stupendously worked out colourful presentation folios. In the museum‘s new show they are complemented by drawings, models, original costumes and scenery components by notable national and international lenders, as for instance the theatre of castle Český Krumlov in Bohemia. In addition the close connection and cooperation with the Picture Gallery, the Collection of Sculptures and Decorative Arts, the Imperial Carriage Museum and the Collection of Historic Music Instruments of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien leverages the exhibition with an abundance of exemplary objects of splendid quality. The show is animated by movies and an audio guide as well as especially designed activity stations for kids. The presentation at the Theatermuseum and its varied event programme focus on five big topics: Spettacolo barocco austriaco I illustrates the highlights of the baroque pomp and theatre performances at the Viennese court of the 17th century. Special emphasis is turned to the creation process of the festive opera Il pomo d‘oro, composed in the honor of emperor Leopold I and the Spanish princess Margarita Teresa and to its stage designer, the imperial theatre engineer Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini. The section The great competitor is all about the rivalry between the Bourbon King Louis XIV and the Habsburg Emperor Leopold I - not only on a political level. Both monarchs also strived for hegemony by means of pretentious programmatic celebratory events. Italy served Leopold I as a source of inspiration for the formation of his grandiose festivities. The chapter Spettacolo mediceo describes the magnificent festive culture in Florence, deployed by the Medici family since the 15th century in order to enhance their recognition in society, and its influence over the development at the Viennese court. Spettacolo barocco! Theatre‘s triumph March 3rd, 2016 - January 30th, 2017 Lobkowitzplatz 2, 1010 Wien [email protected] T +43 1 525 24 5315 Arlecchino and other Masks visualizes the development and iconography of the theatrical form Commedia dell‘arte and its successful extension from Italy to Northern Europe. In their beginnings these acting troupes performed only in market places and streets before gaining entry to the European courts and entertained their audience with everlasting themes that affect mankind. A baroque gem, a movie about the history of the oldest and to this day staging castle theatre in Český Krumlov leads over to the chapter The Art of Illusion, conveying the refinement of baroque stage constructions, their elaborated perspectives and innovative techniques. In the room titled Spectaculum sacrum the influence of religion and church with their school and religious order theatres of the Jesuits, Benedictines and Piarists over the baroque era performances and their further development is being explored. The exhibition tour ends with the chapter Spettacolo barocco austriaco II. The bombastic splendor with its peak under Emperor Charles I came to an end under his daughter Maria Theresia. Due to the War of Austrian Succession the financial means to maintain the magnificent festivities at court had ceased and commercial theatre came into existence. After the foundation of the Kärntnertortheater in 1708, Maria Theresia started the conversion of the unoccupied Court Ballhouse on St. Michael‘s Square into an opera house, open to the paying public, the „Altes Burgtheater“. The four elements, heaven and hell meet in the court yard of the Lobkowitz palace: an installation by the Slovakian artist Robert Gabris imitates the stage coulisses and invites the visitor into a baroque playground interpreted with modern images. The exhibition at the Theatermuseum was curated by Daniela Franke, Rudi Risatti, Andrea Sommer- Mathis and Alexandra Steiner-Strauss and designed by Blaich + Delugan Architects. In 2016 the Theatermuseum commemorates its 25th anniversary in the baroque palace Lobkowitz. With its architecture and history it is the perfect setting for this presentation. Spettacolo barocco!
