Some of what they say is true." She knows firsthand. After Degrassi Schuyler,her partnerKit Hood, and associates,did a documentaryseries,Degrassi Talks, with some of the series' stars • interviewingteenagersacross Canada about problemsthey face. ''We wanted to followthat with a feature-lengthdocumentary," she says. ''We travelledacross the country, interviewedthose in their 20s about what they thought of their prospects for thefuture and where they thought they would fit in. And wehad a 1-800-numberphone line-and advertisedit across the country." What questionersfound, she says, . ''was not a pretty picture. There were a few bright spots, of course,We found the over-achievers,the people who were doinggreat thingswith space and with the rainforests.But theyweren't. the most attractivepeople for a documentarybecausesome· f them­ were a bit of a turnoff.'' · The documentarywas not inade. ''I .don'tlmow if we were right as filtnmakers to back away fromit,'' Schuylersays. ''It would have been an interesting challengeto have made it.'' Instead their research went into a fiction:a 1;.'Vmovie the parttners hope will be the kickoffof a weekly series. It has 10 characters inin their "an amalgamam of peoplewehad met,"some working,somestillin school, but all of them · · gin the sa1neg1·ungy apat·ltnentbuilding. And it's got a differentcast than Degrassi,except for Stacie MJstysyn. Othersinclude GordonWoolvet lllid BillyMerasty and playing parents, Kate Lynch,Barry Flatman and • ReinerSchwarz, whose character lived in the building in the '60s and now · wants to buy it • Degrassi,says Schuyler,was ''a great ride for all of us.'' Its three series sold around the world. ''Fan mail, even by fax, comesin • currently from Australiaand Israel. ''Telefil1nCanada told us the other day that,we're the second highest revenue producing company on the English-languageside. SullivanFilms with Road To Avonlea and Anne Of • GreenGables is the highest.'' Degrassikids share in part of the • windfall. Schuyler and Hood six years ago formed PlayingWith Time Foundation, into which they put a percentage of the series' low budgets. That resulted in scholarshipsthat now help former Degrassiactors for er education, apprenticeshipprograms or therapy. ''You don't work with 60 kids and not have problems with someof them," she notes.
