Gary Varrella has been elected to a seat on the (International) Association for Education of Teachers of Science (AETS) Elections Committee. He has also been appointed by the AETS president to sit on the Awards Committee. Both are three year appointments. The terms will begin in January with the convening of the annual AETS conference in Charleston, SC. Mark Goor presented at the Public Forum on Reauthorization of IDEA to the Assistant Secretary of Education on December 6, 2001. Betty Sturtevant, Steve White, and Kristy Dunlap presented a paper titled "Learning to Teach Literacy in a High Stakes Testing Environment: A Three Year Study of Pre-Service and Beginning Childhood and Middle Grade Teachers" at the National Reading Conference in San Antonio on December 5. Betty Sturtevant organized and chaired the National Reading Conference's Study Group on Adolescent Literacy Research, December 4, 5, 6, and 7 in San Antonio. Betty Sturtevant attended the meeting of the Board of Directors of the National Reading Conference to present the Editor's Report for the Journal of Literacy Research, December 3, in San Antonio. Jim Upperman is chairing the Northern Region Superintendent of the Year Selection Committee. This committee will select the 2001-02 recipient from the twenty school divisions in Region IV. The recipient will be recognized at the annual VASS banquet in April in Roanoke at which time he/she will be competing for the Virginia Superintendent of the Year Award. Alan Leis presented two workshops on Managing Change and Team Building at the Mediterranean Association of International Schools Conference in Madrid, November 2-4, 2001. At the request of the Superintendent, Alan Leis led a team of outside experts in a review of the Human Resources Department of Roanoke City Public Schools in October-November 2001. Debra Sprague and Mike Behrmann published a book chapter titled "Zoning in on Physics: Creating Virtual Reality Environments to Aid Students with Learning Disabilities" in Scruggs, T.E., & Mastropieri, M.A. (Eds.), Advances in Learning and Behavioral Disabilities (Vol. 15) (pp. 17-38). New York: Elvesier Science. Tom Scruggs and Margo Mastropieri published "How to Summarize Single-Participant Research: Ideas and Applications" in Exceptionality, winter 2001. Julie Kidd with Elisabeth Casey, an Alexandria City Public Schools teacher, presented a paper, file://W:\news\newsletter\011402.htm 7/17/2003 GSE Weekly Newsletter, January 14, 2002 Page 2 of 4 "Developing Literacy Through Family Stories and Photos: A Family Literacy Project," at the National Council of Teachers of English in November, 2001 in Baltimore. Julie Kidd and Sylvia Sanchez presented a paper co-authored with Eva Thorp titled "A Focus on Family Stories: Enhancing Preservice Teachers' Cultural Awareness" at the National Reading Conference annual meeting in December 2001 in San Antonio. Marjorie Hall Haley and Becky Fox had an article published in the Fall 2001 edition of Academic Exchange Quarterly. The focus of the publication was on Language Teaching and Learning. The title of their article is, "Examining Language Proficiency of Teacher Candidates - A Critical Issue in Teacher Preparedness." Marjorie Hall Haley has been invited to serve as judge for the 2002 Congres de la Culture Francaise en Floride. This event will take place April 11-13 in Orlando and will include Pieces et Scenettes, Declamation, Discours, Dictee, Lectue, Civilisation et Casse-tete. Paula Johnson received a new award sponsored by the Arlington County Public Schools in the amount of $25,677. Brett Wright received a new award sponsored by the United States Forest Service in the amount of $46,002. David Anderson received a new award sponsored by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the amount of $35,000. Mark Goor received a new award sponsored by the Fairfax County Public Schools in the amount of $14,400. David Anderson submitted a proposal titled "Bi-Annual Student Survey" to the Manassas City Public Schools. Margo Mastropieri and Tom Scruggs submitted a proposal titled "Preparation of Leadership Personnel: Doctoral Program in Special Education" to the U.S. Department of Education. Anastasia Kitsantas and Herb Ware submitted a proposal titled "Perceived School Safety as a Contextual Component of Education: Relationships among School, Family, and Community Characteristics" to the American Educational Research Association. Kevin Clark submitted a proposal titled "Potomac Regional Education Partnership Community Technology Centers" to the U.S. Department of Education. A new cohort group is scheduled to begin at the Prince William campus in January that is open to teachers from any school division that might be interested in the literacy Master's program that licenses teachers as reading specialist. Congratulations to Mike Kohn who received his B.S. in Health, Fitness, and Recreation Resources in 1997 on being named to the 2002 Men's Olympic Bobsled Team. Back to top A School Safety Conference will be held January 23-25, 2002 at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, Virginia. The conference is co-sponsored by the National Institute of Justice, COPS, George Mason University, and Sandia National Laboratories. Further information is available in the Dean's office. (The following conference announcements were listed previously and will continue to appear until the conference date) The Annual PhD in Education Program Colloquium will be held on April 19 from 5:00-7:00 PM in Sub II Ballroom. This event is designed for all faculty, doctoral students and graduates of the doctoral program. The AAHE Assessment Conference will be held June 20-23, 2002 in Boston, MA. The Technology and Media (TAM) Division of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) will be holding their TAM-EAST Conference 2002, from January 10-12 at the Hyatt Regency Reston. Beverly Shaklee and Margo Blackwell will be leading a group focused on "Education and Culture in the Bahamas," January 5-12, 2002. This collaboration will focus on the educational experiences of K-12 students in The Commonwealth of the Bahamas. University students will have a unique opportunity to work as a team with university faculty and teacher education students from The College of the Bahamas in K-12 classrooms on Andros Island. A wide array of experience from one-to-one tutoring, micro-teaching and community forums will be available. We will also have the opportunity to explore the environment, history and heritage of the islands. Undergraduate, graduate students (credit available) and faculty are welcome.
