The popular Puccini work appears every five years in the San Diego Opera T repertory. There is always a story behind the story, so here is the explanation of why this particular opera keeps coming back. A brand-new Civic Theatre in San Diego challenged the local Opera Guild to take the risk of producing an opera for the gala 1965 opening series of theatrical performances. Could it be done? Combining talent from the Globe Theatre and certain faculty at San Diego State University, the home-grown production of La bohème was an artistic success under the skillful leadership of Maestro Walter Herbert, recruited from Houston Grand Opera by a determined group of Opera Guild ladies. These energetic founders gained national attention as the “Valkyries.” That was the beginning of the 50-year chronicle of San Diego Opera (SDO) seasons with its signature La bohème performed every five years.
