Short Name: ECC ID 554 Project/Group/Network: Marmara University Pendik Hospital, Clinical Microbiology, Istanbul, Turkey Contact 1: Professor Aysegul Karahasan Yagci, [email protected] Contact 2: Professor Nurver Ulger, [email protected] •A 750 ‐bed tertiary hospital •The Microbiology Department is organized as a specialty department with 7 faculty members. •The Department runs the central Clinical Laboratory in the area where all samples from 7 government hospitals for microbiology are processed. •The Department has subspecialty units for bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics and serology. • Given the fact that the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance is a frequent encounter during our daily practice, the department has developed a high competence on those subjects and is one “center for excellence for research and practice” in Turkey. •Our center serves as a central laboratory for molecular diagnosis and we have the widest panel of molecular tests in the area. •Our diagnostic laboratory for anaerobic infections is one of the best in our country and there are several ongoing joint research projects. •Our department also runs a unit for central sterile supplies which serves 2,000 operations per month and is also the only validated unit in the area. DEPARTMENT: Number of samples per year in microbiological services in bacteriology 70.000 in parasitology 5500 7 professors ‐‐/‐‐Others 45 technicians Mycobacteriology‐5000, Mycology‐ 2300, Serology‐ 36 15 students (training in clinical microbiology, Msc, PhD) For up to one week Observer can see the general presentation of the department and facilities. The organization and structure of services are discussed in detail. The observer is given the opportunity to speak to several of the staff and to discuss and practice in one or more areas of special interest. Diagnostic and therapeutic practices and laboratory manuals in pertinent fields are discussed.
