Limerick Limerick is located at the head of the Shannon Estuary where the river widens before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Limerick is the third most populous urban centre in Ireland. The county colours are green and white, and the county has a strong hurling tradition. Sports teams from this county are often referred to as ‘the Shannonsiders.’ Limerick was established by the Vikings as a walled city on King’s Island (an island in the River Shannon) in 812. A great castle was built on the orders of King John in 1200. It was besieged three times in the 17th century, resulting in the famous Treaty of Limerick and the flight of the defeated Catholic leaders abroad. Much of the city was built during the following Georgian prosperity, which ended abruptly with the Act of Union in 1800. Today the city flourishes with a growing multicultural population. The Hunt Museum in Limerick City houses the original artifacts gathered by collectors John and Gertrude Hunt which includes ancient pottery and artwork from around the world. King John’s Castle on ‘King’s Island’ is the heart of medieval Limerick City. The castle’s exhibition brings to life over 800 years of local history.
