Bullivant Job Willis Richard WATH-tlPON DEARNE is a large and well-built village, with several good shops and public houses, situated on a pleasant acclivity, near the Dearne anrl Dove canal, 5! miles N. of Rotherbam, and ll miles N.E by N. of Sheffield. In its vicinity are several extensive potteries, and coal and iron works. Its PARISH comprises the five townships of Wath, Brampton­ Bierlow, Nether Hoyland, Swinton, and Wentworth, which contain 11,120 acres of land, and 9521 inhabitants, and are all in Rotherham Uuion, ex· cept Nether Hoyland, which is in Barnsley Union. Earl Fitzwilliam, whose princely seat ( Wentworth House,) is in the heart of the parish, is lord of ihe manors, and owner of most of the soil. Wath township contains 1495 souls, and 1687 acres. The Church (All Saints,) is a vicarage, valued in K. B. at £15. 10s. 2~d., and in 1831 at £315, with the perpetual curacy of Adwick-upon-Dearne annexed to it, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and incumbency of the Rev. H. Partington, M.A. As Afternoon Preacher he has £47. lOs. a year from Ellis's Charity. Here is a Wesleyan Re­ fOI·mers' Chapel, built in 1852. The Charities for the poor yield about£Ia, and for the School £14 a year. A Monthly Magazine was published in this "Queen of Villages," from January, 1831, till December, 1833. Gas Works were constructed here in 1844-~, at the cost of £1800, raised in £6 shares. IlRAMPTON -IliERLOW township contains 1741 inhabitants, 3150 acres .
