Attachment 1 2014 Travel Grants 1. Applicant: Catherine Cole Grant Award: $4,000 Grant Type : Educational Travel Grant This will provide support to attend the annual conference of the ICOM CAMOC Committee (Collections and Activities of Museums of Cities) which will explore issues of relevance to city museums including how they can help people to understand, explain and make use of the ongoing transformation of urban society from its industrial base to a future marked by limited resources and expanding technological capabilities. 2. Applicant: Poushali Mitra Grant Award: $4,000 Grant Type: Educational Travel Grant This will provide support to participate in a 3-month internship in South Africa with the African human rights center, the Legal Resource Center. Poushali will be using this opportunity to engage newcomer refugees around heritage issues, engage with The Workers Museum and identify community champions about heritage. She will use this knowledge back in Edmonton to help the EHC and the heritage sector become aware of newcomer identity-formation and how we can better engage this demographic. 3. Applicant: Robert Buckle Grant Award: $4,000 Grant Type: Educational Travel Grant This will provide support to attend and present at the 18 th ICOMOS Scientific Symposium Heritage and Landscape as Human Values. Attending this will allow Robert and the Old Strathcona Foundation to expand their knowledge and approach to built heritage on Whyte Avenue, as spearheaded through the Whyte Space Workshop (March 2014). 4. Applicant: Don Hill Grant Award: $1,260 Grant Type: Educational Travel Grant This will provide support to learn about animating ‘intangible heritage’ through digital platforms from Dr. Meyer-Dinkgrafe at the University of Lincoln in the UK, a distinguished world expert in that field. Page 1 of 7 2014 Seed Project Grants 1. Organization: Creative Age Edmonton Grant Award: $900 Creative Age Edmonton (CAE) recently helped match the Multicultural Women & Senior Services Association (MWSSA) in Mill Woods with local writer and historian Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail as part of a pilot outreach project. For five sessions in August and September, Ms. Metcalfe-Chenail will meet with a group of seniors at the centre to facilitate a video-recorded storytelling circle around their lives. 2. Organization: Jewish Archives & Historical Society of Edmonton and Northern Alberta (JAHSENA) Grant Award: $1,000 This seed grant would provide JAHSENA with the funding necessary to properly investigate the costs and challenges of compiling a collection of essays, largely drawn from the archives of their tri-annual publication Yensha/Heritage , and pairing them with appropriate photos from their archive for publication in a hard copy book form. 2015 Operational Grants 1. Organization: Alberta Aviation Museum Association Grant Award: $ 116,183.75 The AAMA’s mission is to tell the story of Edmonton’s rich aviation legacy through exciting displays and activities related to Alberta and the north, past, present ad future. 2. Organization: Alberta Genealogical SocietyD Grant Award: $18,904.43 Founded in 1973, the Alberta Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization which, for the past forty years, has promoted the study of genealogy and genealogical research within the province of Alberta. This funding focuses only on their Edmonton Branch activities. 3. Organization: Alberta Labour History InstituteD Grant Award: $7,488.75 The Alberta Labour History Institute (ALHI) is a non-profit organization whose members are volunteers dedicated to researching, recording and preserving the contributions of the working men and women of Alberta to the province. The mission of the ALHI is to contribute to an historical awareness of workers’ past Page 2 of 7 through the ALHI website, oral history collection, educational initiatives, and special events. 4. Organization: Alberta Pioneer Railway Association Grant Award: $8,559.86 The Alberta Railway Museum is operated by the Alberta Pioneer Railway Association (APRA). The APRA is a non-profit organization of volunteers whose interest is the collection, preservation, restoration, and interpretation of artifacts that represent the technology and history of the Canadian National and Northern Alberta Railways as well as industrial and short line railways in Western Canada. 5. Organization: Edmonton and District Historical SocietyD Grant Award: $3,660.00D The Edmonton and District Historical Society (EDHS) is a charitable, non-profit, registered society. It is dedicated to promoting, preserving, and celebrating the history of Edmonton and the surrounding districts. Programs and activities include organizing the annual Historic Festival and Doors Open Edmonton, operating the History Centre in Fort Saskatchewan, holding an on-going Speakers Series, and producing a local newsletter. 6. Organization: Edmonton Radial Railway SocietyD Grant Award: $1,472.49 The Edmonton Radial Railway Society (ERRS) restores, maintains and operates historic streetcars with priority given to Edmonton streetcars and streetcars from across Western Canada. Streetcars have been restored to operating condition are placed in service on a regular schedule throughout the summer months at Fort Edmonton Park and the High Level Bridge streetcar line for the enjoyment and education of the general public. 7. Organization: The Edmonton Telephone Historical Information Centre FoundationD Grant Award: $12,106.00 The Edmonton Telephone Historical Information Centre Foundations mandate is to achieve the acquisition, research, organization, documentation, exhibition, and storage of historical materials relating to the development of the telephone industry in Edmonton and the development of telecommunications technology in general. Organization: Friends of Rutherford House Society Grant Award: $985.50 The vision of the FoRHS is to have the Rutherford House Provincial Site widely recognized for its historical and cultural significance and for the FoRHS to inspire and enrich the community. They have gone through a transformation over the last year and a half and are working to develop a refined purpose for the organization. 9. Organization: The Olde Towne Beverly Historical SocietyD Grant Award: $2,152.65 The OTBHS is mandated to preserve the history of Beverly, using it to educate citizens and to build community. They educate the public about Beverly’s history, build a sense of community within the area and preserve the historical documents, artifacts and significant landmarks of Beverly. 10. Organization: Societe historique francophone de l’AlbertaD Grant Award: $1,007.00 Societe historique francophone de l’Alberta has been active in the francophone community since 2004. Its foremost goal is the preservation of Alberta’s francophone heritage and history for educational purposes. This historical society seeks to not only protect the francophone heritage but also make it accessible to the whole community. Data collection and their wide diffusion are important dimensions of the Society’s strategic plan. 2015 Project Grants 1. Project Name: Ad Astra Project Applicant Organization: 418 (City of Edmonton) Squadron Association Grant Award: 15,000.00 The City of Edmonton’s “Village at Griesbach” park development project is dedicated to the memory of the history and heritage of the Canadian Navy, Army, and Air Force in the Edmonton area. This Grant Request is to go towards the Ad Astra sculpture. 2. Project Name: Interpretive Plan for Alberta Aviation Museum Applicant Organization: Alberta Aviation Museum Association Grant Award: $15,000.00 The Alberta Aviation Museum is undertaking a major redevelopment of its displays, focusing on the history of flight operations out of Blatchford Field and how they affected the growth of the city. This support will support the work of a qualified museum consultant to develop the plan. Page 4 of 7 3. Project Name: Moving Forward: Alberta Women and Work Project Applicant Organization: Alberta Labour History Institute (ALHI) Grant Award: $15,000.00 The project gathers the stories of the important work carried out by women in Edmonton’s history and honours the achievements of women in various areas of work and the labour movement. They will share the stories through display panels, brochures and videos made available to libraries, museums, unions, and schools. 4. Project Name: From There to Here: Reflections from Edmonton’s South-east Asian Community Applicant Organization: Creative Age Edmonton Grant Award: $11,550.00 This project seeks to document the relfections of a group of Edmonton seniors from Southeast Asia to record this history, share it in an engaging way, and provide a model for other cultural communities in the city. 5. Project Name: A History of Edmonton’s Human Services Sector Applicant Organization: Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations Grant Award: $D15,000.00 This project will document the history of the nonprofit human services sector in Edmonton, identifying its development and growth, highlighting important events and identifying trends. 6. Project Name: Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues 100 th Anniversary Project – Historical Research Coordinator Applicant Organization: Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) Grant Award: $15,000.00 EFCL celebrates 100 years in 2012. To honour the decades of achievement of community league (CL) volunteers we will create a capital park project with space to tell their story. Honouring our history is inspiring.
