Thanks to generous donations from the Oswald Family Foundation, Black Hills Energy, and other sponsors, the BHP is bringing this special event taking place over Labor Day Weekend to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Custer State Park. This poignant story of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau has proven to be a resounding success. It has been heralded as "One of the Most Striking Performances" by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and by critics as "...truly one of the special and unique theatre experiences ever...". Nature was co-written by the four times great-grandson of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who also plays his famous grandfather in the show. Other cast members include his two young sons, who are, of course, also Emerson descendants. The "walking" part of the play happens as audience members walk between four sets installed in a meadow located by the State Game Lodge. As each act concludes, actors and audience members travel to next the next scene accompanied by musicians playing period pieces and a community chorus. Local young actress, Isabella Naasz was chosen to play Elly, the daughter of Emerson. To make the experience more enjoyable, the TigerLionArts suggests the following. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking. The walk is not on strenuous terrain, but sensible shoes are desirable. Please bring your water bottle or water container. The show goes on rain or shine, so if it looks like rain, bring some rain gear. Children are welcome and encouraged to attend. This play is perfect for families as it is outside and engaging for kids. Also, kids 18 and under go free. Bring a blanket to sit on and carry from set to set. Chairs are not necessary as all the action is easy to see and hear. Allow yourself plenty of time for parking and walking to the reception area, where you Allow yourself plenty of time for parking and walking to the reception area, where you will find water and restrooms nearby. The show is 90 minutes with no intermission. Come early for a 30-minute pre-show performance that includes bagpiping and choral music to enjoy. Nature is an extraordinary, family-friendly journey that co-mingles story, spirit, and nature, as a means to reconnect its audience with the natural world. In 2019 Custer State Park will celebrate its 100th birthday. In 2020, the Black Hills Playhouse will have been in the Park for 75 years. This long-standing partnership has resulted in decades of cultural experiences in Custer State Park. Ticket prices for adults are $15 and children are free. These low ticket prices are available because of the support of our generous sponsors.
