Crabs Continue Slump in Playoff Opener

Crabs continue slump in playoff opener Posted by TBNDavid On 09/21/2017 (York, PA., Sep. 20, 2017) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-1) dropped game one of the best of five playoff series against the York Revolution (1-0) 5-3, on a walk-off two-run homerun in the tenth inning. The Revolution wasted no time getting their offense started, with Alonzo Harris singling to lead off the bottom of the first. A wild pitch moved Harris into scoring position, before a triple from Rubi Silva scored him easily to take an early 1-0 lead. The struggles continued for Gaby Hernandez in the second, as the Revs added two more runs in the inning. Isaias Tejeda walked to start the inning, moving up to third on a double from Travis Witherspoon. Hernandez hit the next batter in the inning, loading the bases with still nobody out. A strikeout put an out on the board, before a sacrifice fly from Harris scored Tejeda from third. Jared Mitchell followed with a two-out single, scoring Witherspoon to take a 3-0 lead. Jay Gause was strong on the mound early for York, allowing just one hit through the first three innings. Michael Snyder finally got to Gause with a solo homerun in the fourth, cutting the deficit to two runs. Hernandez settled in after the second inning, getting through five frames allowing just the three early runs. The Blue Crabs turned the deficit over to the bullpen, who continued on strong in the night. On the other side, Gause got through six innings before giving way to his bullpen as well. Both pens traded scoreless seventh innings, before Ricardo Gomez came in the eighth for York. Gomez picked up two quick outs, before an infield single from Jose Lozada kept the inning alive. Nate Samson followed with a walk, before a double in the gap allowed both runners to score and tie the game. After Chase Hutchingson stranded Hoes in scoring position, the Southern Maryland bullpen worked a scoreless bottom of the inning. The tie game headed to the ninth, with each team working a 1-2-3 inning. After Grant Sides (1-0) worked a scoreless top of the tenth, Evan Reed (0-1) came on for the Blue Crabs in the bottom half. Reed picked up two outs to start the frame, before a double from Rubi Silva kept the inning alive. Telvin Nash was up next, getting into a hitter’s count at 3-1. Nash then got ahold of the next pitch, driving a long homerun to left-center field to walk off the first game. The Blue Crabs will return to action Thursday, September 21st for game two of the best of five playoff series against the Revolution. Southern Maryland will send RHP Daryl Thompson (9-7, 3.86) to the mound, looking to even the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. on Thursday at PeoplesBank Park.
