Open Gardens Visit beautiful gardens, support Cornwall Hospice Care Title sponsor www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/opengardens 40 years ago Enid Dalton-White MBE, one of the pioneers who ensured the vision of a hospice for Cornwall, invited visitors to the grounds of her home in Polruan to raise vital funds to build Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. She set a trend that continues today through our Open Gardens scheme, now in its 9th year. A long-standing supporter of the charity and the Open Gardens campaign is Cornish gardener, George Kestell; As I look out of the office window across my own garden, I see the range of Hellebores, Camellias and Snowdrops all set off by the dark purple of the Pittosporum. These winter flowers keep me going through the tough times. Lately everyone has been affected by the Coronavirus crisis, lockdown has been difficult for many, but these winter gems have been a source of delight. Unfortunately, charities like Cornwall Hospice Care are struggling, beds are under threat due to the closure of shops and limited fundraising opportunities. However, this Cornish healthcare charity is to me like these winter flowers, there to help us through the tough times. Having received support from the hospice I know everyone involved in this charity does an amazing amount of work to help both patients and their families in the hospices and through community support. Hopefully within the next couple of months some sort of ‘normality’ can resume, the weather will be warmer and all the lovely gardens in this guide will be bursting with colour and with friends and families enjoying their delights. Let us be the hope for Cornwall Hospice Care, let us be their winter flowers and help them through these tough times by supporting this wonderful campaign. Gardens also need much care and I must pay tribute to the owners who work tirelessly to open their gardens to the public. I am always amazed by the variety of garden styles, sizes and plants on display. I am also in wonder of the refreshments too! Over the years the Open Gardens scheme has raised many thousands of pounds and I hope this will continue for many more. Meudon Gardens 8th May & 29th Sept 11am - 3pm Meudon Hotel, Mawnan Smith, Falmouth, TR11 5HT Entry: By donation At this hidden-gem hotel near Falmouth, you’ll have the chance to wander through eight and a half acres of sub-tropical gardens towards a private beach - Bream Cove - just as locals and visitors have since the 1800s. Bream Cove is a beautiful, unspoilt corner awaiting exploration. This private paradise is perfect for wild swimming, snorkelling, paddle boarding or just relaxing, while the South West Coast Path can be picked up from here to continue your adventure. Trevince Estate Garden 9th May 10am - 5pm Trevince, Gwennap, Redruth, TR16 6BA Garden owner: Trish Stone Entry: £6 per person Designed and planted over 200 years ago, at Trevince you’ll find an 18th century walled garden, pond garden and shrubbery and a wilderness walk along the far edges of the estate grounds and woodland. Directions: From the A393 at Burncoose follow the road to Gwennap. The road is then signposted to the estate gardens. Penmilder 22nd May 11am - 4.30pm Penmilder, Lodge Hill, Liskeard, PL14 4EL Garden owners: Amanda & Chris Deegan Entry: £5 per person Penmilder garden is approximately 2.5 acres of lawns, featuring mature borders and less formal wooded areas. Bluebells and primroses make it particularly pretty in spring. There’s also an apple orchard and a pond that supports a variety of wildlife. Directions: From Liskeard town centre take the St Keyne/Duloe road (B3254). Continue past the station and Trevillis Lodge. Parking is at Santa Trees and the garden is directly opposite. WC P 6 7 4. The plants in this garden are nothing like you will see out and about. Many are huge, spectacular in colour, shape and perfume. There are signposted walks around the garden of varying lengths.
