Brussels,18June2007 S180/07 Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, welcomes today's appointment of Miroslav LAJČÁK as EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina JavierSOLANA,EUHighRepresentative fortheCommonForeignandSecurityPolicy (CFSP), welcomedtheCouncil's appointmenttodayofMiroslavLAJČÁKas theEuropeanUnionSpecial Representative for BosniaandHerzegovina: "I am delightedthat the Council has appointedMiroslav Lajčák as EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina on the basis of my recommendation. Ambassador Lajčák is a senior diplomat with broad experience in European and Balkan issues, including as my personal representative forthe facilitationof the Montenegrindialogue. I look forwardtoworking withAmbassador Lajčák, whohas my full support,andI wishhim every success.I shouldalsolike toexpress my gratitude tothe outgoing Special Representative, Christian Schwarz-Schilling, forhisdedicationandworkthroughouthismandate." The Council took the formal decision (2007/87/CFSP) today to appoint Miroslav Lajčák as the EuropeanUnion's Special Representative (EUSR) for Bosnia andHerzegovina,witheffect from 1 July. Mr Lajčák was appointed as the international community's High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina last month. He succeeds Dr Christian Schwarz-Schilling as both High Representative andas the EU Special Representative.Mr Lajčák,a Slovakdiplomat whowas born in1963,is currently Director-General for Political Affairs inthe SlovakForeign Ministry. He acted as mediator and personal representative of Javier SOLANA in Montenegro last year where he oversawtheMontenegrinreferendumonindependence. Ambassador Lajčákwill continue tooffer the EU's advice andfacilitationinthe political process; to promote overall EU coordination; toprovide the Headof the EU police mission(EUPM) withlocal political guidance; to provide the EU Force Commander withlocal political advice; toengage with the Bosnia andHerzegovina authorities ontheir full cooperationwiththe International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia andtoprovide political advice andfacilitationin the process of constitutionalreform.
