After a strong start with three goals in the opening period, the Spirit held on for the rest of the game for a 4-1 victory. It only took three minutes for the Spirit to strike first. D.J. Busdeker scored his fifth goal of the season on a tip of a Filip Hronek shot. Brady Gilmour gathered the puck at the left circle, and made a pass to Hronek who stood at the blue line. Hronek took a wrist shot, which deflected off of Busdeker’s stick in front of the crease for the goal. At 10:42 the Firebirds struck back. A turnover in the Flint zone began the rush as Maurizio Colella found Ryan Moore in the neutral zone. Moore pushed the puck into the Saginaw zone as Kole Sherwood streaked towards the net. Moore made a nifty pass through two defenders to Sherwood, who scored his 28th goal after a quick move on Evan Cormier. Exactly four minutes later, the Spirit took back the lead when Filip Hronek collected his 10th goal of the year. Kris Bennett accrued the puck behind the Flint net and skated towards the blue line. Once he got there he dropped the puck off for Hronek, who took a wrist shot from the left point. Flint goaltender Garrett Forrest was screened by two players, and could not locate the puck until it was in the net. 30 seconds later, Saginaw added its third goal of the period to give them a 3-1 lead. Keaton Middleton shot the puck into the Flint zone. Hayden Hodgson chased it down to the right board, made a slick move past a defender. The puck followed him to the trapezoid area where he made a no-look pass to a streaking Kris Bennett who tallied his 19th goal of the season. Saginaw led Flint in shots on goal, 21-9. No goals were scored in the second period, but there were plenty of power plays to go around. Five penalties were committed, but three went against the Spirit. However, the Spirit held their own and left the Firebirds scoreless in each man-advantage. Unfortunately, the Firebirds also held the Spirit scoreless keeping the score 3-1 heading into the final period. Flint led Saginaw in shots on goal, 14-5. Only one goal was scored in the third period, and it belonged to the Spirit. With less than three minutes to go in the game, the Firebirds pulled their goalie for an extra man. Just 18 seconds later, at 17:41 D.J. Busdeker added his second goal of the game with the empty-netter to give the Spirit the 4-1 victory. Saginaw led Flint in shots on goal, 38-28 and took the game by a final of 4-1. With the victory, the Spirit are now seven points back of the Flint Firebirds for the eighth and final playoff spot. Season Series: Tonight the Spirit and the Flint Firebirds faceoff for the seventh of eight meetings in the Coors Light I-75 Divide Cup Series.
