Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, each raised a regiment of a thousand men at its own expense, and several independent companies were formed in Wales . I n this manner men were raised and presented to the - O State, of which upwards of two thirds were btained from n Scotland, and principally from the H ighla d clans . m M L eo d so n At this ti e Lord c , the eldest of the Earl of Cromarty, whose title had been attainted and his estates 1 forfeited for his participation in the Rebellion of 7 45 , returned to England from Sweden , having attained in its - service the rank of Lieutenant General . Being well received by H is Majesty King George I I , and finding his i nfluence in the H ighlands still considerable, although ff destitute of property, he o ered his services to raise a regiment . The offer was accepted , and such was the respect entertained for his family and name, that in a short time 840 H ighlanders were recruited and marched to Elgin . HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE 2 6 H ere they were joined by 3 Lowlanders, raised by Cap tains the Honorable J ohn Lindsay, David Baird , J ames O Fowlis, and other fficers, and by 3 4 English and I rish , b e who had een recruit d in Glasgow . They amounted in all to men , and were embodied at Elgin under the ’ M c L eo d S s 1 8 name of Highlander in April 7 7 , where they were inspected by General Skene, and approved by him as an excellent hardy body of men , fitted for any service . I mmediately after the completion of this battalion , letters O f service were granted for the creation of a second batta in lion , which was raised like manner, with nearly the same expedition and in equal numbers . There is no record extant to Show the different nationalities of which this battalion was formed , but it is probable that its compo sitiou was very Similar to that of the first battalion when M c L eo d raised . T hus in the course of a few months Lord from being an exile without fortune or British military rank, found himself at the head of upwards of of his countrymen , of whom nearly were from that district and neighbourhood in which h is family had once possessed so much influence . 0 0 Each battalion consisted of 5 sergeants, 5 corporals, 2 fi fer s 2 0 drummers and , pipers , and privates, and was o ffic er ed as under. Th e uniform of the regiment was red , with the regular Highland equipments . th at wh en I t is worthy of remark ,\ first raised , there were no less than 1 9 Offi cers irr the regiment named Mackenzie . I t is probable that the proportion of non commissioned officers and privates of that name was equally large, owing to the fact of the regiment having, as already stated , been principally raised on the estates of M c L e o d the Earl of Cromarty, the father of Lord . T hese e states are now in the possession of the present Du c hess of Sutherland , who is Countess of Cromarty in her o wn right .
