Club Offerings Arts and Crafts Club (Ms. Betancourt) The purpose of the Arts and Crafts Club is to provide students with a creative outlet where they can express themselves in a comfortable and encouraging atmosphere. We will cater to club members’ artistic and creative interests by gathering their feedback and requests for future crafts. Some of these projects will include scrapbooks, accessories, and calligraphy. Upon completion of an activity, students are encouraged to share their artwork with their peers, friends, and family. The Arts and Crafts Club is open to students in middle and high school. Best Buddies (Ms. Medina) Riviera Preparatory School is an affiliate of Best Buddies International. Our Best Buddies chapter offers students socialization and leadership opportunities that benefit persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The club holds meetings to plan and implement yearlong activities and events that enable children with IDD to become more included in the community while heightening their social and emotional development. Best Buddies is open to high school students. Computer Appreciation Club (Mr. Farrow) The Computer Appreciation Club is a student-run organization that focuses on current topics in the computer world. In our weekly meetings, students discuss new technology, computer hardware and applications, and programming languages. Students develop an enhanced perspective of the technology industry as they explore the latest gadgets, security systems, and video game systems. Professional speakers in the technology field are frequently invited to discuss the evolution of computing and future job opportunities. This club is for high school students only. Culinary Club (Ms. Anderez) The Culinary Club is geared towards those who are passionate about food and cooking. Whether a frustrated chef or certified "foodie," all participants will expand their culinary horizons. Students of all skill-levels are encouraged to join. During meetings, participants will learn different cooking techniques, develop culinary skills, try new recipes, explore exotic cuisines, make new friends, and much more. Debate Club (Mr. Elman) Debate Club is designed to help students develop their public speaking skills. It also provides practice in developing sound and logical arguments. Students participating in debate show initiative and leadership while expanding their minds and increasing their understanding of multiple sides of important issues. Debate Club is open to middle and high school students. Drumline (Mr. Ambrose) The Drumline is a percussion group that performs traditional drumline cadences and pieces. Students do not need to have played drums before to join this group, but a good sense of rhythm is key. Drumline members will learn to read written notation, play in time, and count the beats. There will be several different performances, both on and off campus, as well as performing for select sporting events. Students may need to carry harnesses with drums attached, which may be heavy. Drumline instruments include snare drums, bass drums, tenor drums, and cymbals. Drumline is open to middle and high school students. Riviera Investment Club (Ms. Aldarondo) The Investment Club strives to educate students on the stock market through paper trading ("fake money"). By reviewing the current status of select stocks, students will be able to closely look for specific stocks that interest them. The Investment Club will teach students how to analyze charts and use the most common indicators for determining future performance. The ultimate goal of the club is to prepare our members for future success in the stock market. Jazz Club Ensemble (Mr. Loose) The Jazz Ensemble Club is a performing group that plays music in jazz styles including blues, bebop, modal jazz, and bossa nova. Students who are interested in this group will have played their instrument for several years and have mastered several scales and patterns. Members will be expected to learn about improvisation, chord reading, and common jazz forms. There will be several different on and off campus performances and students may be asked to write, arrange or transcribe music. Students must sing or play the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, bass, guitar, piano, or drums. Jazz Club Ensemble is open to middle and high school students. Key Club (Ms. Montilla) Key Club is a student-led organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others. Our members develop initiative and leadership skills by serving their schools and communities. Key Club members around the world are learning how to lead and stand for what is right through service and volunteerism. In partnership with their local Kiwanis Club, high school students make a positive impact as they serve others in their schools and communities. Key Club is open to high school students only. Marine Conservation Club (Ms. Gonzalez) The MCC is a club that advocates for conservation of oceans and life it supports. Members will participate in events that spread awareness and help clean the seas. We will actively seek partnerships with similar organizations that have the same goals and ambitions; such as, 4Ocean, Pura Vida, University of Miami, and local surf/dive shops. MCC is open to middle and high school students. Modern Music Ensemble (Mr. Loose) The Modern Music Ensemble is a performing group that plays music in the styles of rock, pop, and funk. Students that are interested will have played their instrument for several years and have mastered several scales and chords. Members will be expected to learn about improvisation, chord reading, and popular music forms. There will be several different on and off campus performances, and students may be asked to write, arrange or transcribe music. Students must sing or play the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, bass, guitar or drums. The Modern Music Ensemble is open to high school students only. M.U.N. Model United Nations (Ms. Keller) The United Nations is an international organization composed of all 192 countries, founded after WWII to maintain international peace and security. Model United Nation (MUN) simulates the United Nations by learning about the United Nations system and current events as a base to learn the skills of debate, compromise, conflict resolution, and negotiation. Model United Nation team members have a better overall understanding of the history of the world, geography, diplomacy, and current events. MUN is open to high school students only. Operation Smile (Ms. Betancourt) Operation Smile is an international children's medical charity that repairs children’s cleft lip or cleft palate, forever changing their lives. Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft. 1 in 10 of those children will die before their first birthday. The children who survive are often unable to eat, speak, socialize, or smile. In some places, they are shunned and rejected, and in too many cases, their parents cannot afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a productive life. Our club helps raise awareness and funds to provide surgeries for deserving children all around the world. Operation Smile is open to middle and high school students. Photography Club (Ms. Giganti) The photography club members can learn more about their cameras, as well as different photographic techniques. It provides a social learning environment where students who enjoy photography can meet those with a similar interest. It provides guidance, activities, and other resources related to photography. Students will engage and practice different types of photography skills. All skill levels are welcome. Photography Club is open to middle and high school students. RPG and Strategic Games Club (Mr. Garcia) The Strategic Game Club is a creative, fun, and exciting way for students to spend their afternoon. The program is not only entertaining, but also involves forethought, planning, probability predicting, and imagining skills shared by most strategy games. Players improve these skills as they compete. Dice games, card games, board games, and role-playing games are offered. This club is open to middle and high school students. Riviera Creative Strings Ensemble (Mr. Zeichner) Do you play a string instrument? Would you like to learn how to play modern music on it like pop, rock, or jazz? With the Riviera Strings Ensemble, you can develop your creative side, exploring improvisation, arranging, experimenting with electronic sounds, guitar pedals, and more, all within the context of modern musical genres. Requirements: Members need to have played a string instrument for at least 1 year prior to joining the club, and be enthusiastic about learning to play within non-classical settings. Violin, Viola, Cello, and Upright Bass are accepted! This club is open to middle and high school students. Table Tennis (Mr. Elman) The Riviera Prep Table Tennis Club is the place to be if you want to learn how to play ping pong or to improve your existing skills. It is a once a week opportunity to have fun while improving reflexes and concentration. Club dues are $25 and must be paid on joining either by check made payable to Riviera Preparatory School. All abilities and prior experience with table tennis are welcome. This club is open to high school students only. The Riviera Vocalists (Mr. Kafkes) The Riviera Vocalists is a club for students interested in singing in a group setting. In this ensemble, students will learn more about how to sing properly, perform varying genres of music, and work together as an ensemble to put forth the best possible performance. Meetings will be spent working on repertoire consisting of at least three group numbers and possibly solos. The Riviera Vocalists is open to middle and high school students. Warpaint (Mr. Garcia) The Warpaint Club is a club centered on the model-making and painting. The club fosters artistic talent and budding creativity by teaching a very particular set of skills including molding, cleaning, priming, base- coating, shading, highlighting, and detailing of small 28-32 mm scaled figurines and vehicles, which are also used in the various miniatures-based games played at the RPG and Strategic Games Club.
