BOARD OF REGENTS BRIEFING PAPER 1. Agenda Item Title: Men’s Basketball Head Coach Employment Agreement for Marvin Menzies Meeting Date: April 22, 2016 2. BACKGROUND & POLICY CONTEXT OF ISSUE: This is a five-year Head Coach Employment Agreement (April 22, 2016 through June 30, 2021) for Marvin Menzies to serve as the Men’s Basketball Head Coach at UNLV. Menzies recently served as the Head Coach for New Mexico State University from June 2007 to April 2016. He received his Bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in education from California State University, Sacramento. 3. SPECIFIC ACTIONS BEING RECOMMENDED OR REQUESTED: UNLV Athletics is seeking approval for a five-year contract from April 22, 2016 through June 30, 2021 for Men’s Basketball Head Coach. If approved, beginning on April 22, 2016 through June 30, 2021, the employee’s annual compensation will be as follows: • 2016-17: Base- $350,000; Media- $350,000; Ticket Sales- $200,000 max. ($3.6M threshold) • 2017-18: Base- $350,000; Media- $350,000; Ticket Sales- $200,000 max. (four-year average*) • 2018-19: Base- $350,000; Media- $350,000; Ticket Sales- $200,000 max. (four-year average*) • 2019-20: Base- $400,000; Media- $400,000; Ticket Sales- $250,000 max. (four-year average*) • 2020-21: Base- $400,000; Media- $400,000; Ticket Sales- $250,000 max. (four-year average*) Finally, the employee is eligible for a series of incentives of up to $250,000 per year, based upon team performance. The employee is not eligible for merit increases or cost of living (“COLA”) increases. *The threshold to earn ticket sales revenue will be adjusted annually based upon the four-year average of the immediately preceding four years. 4. IMPETUS (WHY NOW?): UNLV’s Men’s Basketball program does not have a Head Coach, as of April 15, 2016. If approved, the hiring of Menzies will fill the position and give him and his future coaching staff adequate time to effectively recruit prospective student-athletes. 5. BULLET POINTS TO SUPPORT REQUEST/RECOMMENDATION: • Marvin Menzies is a highly successful basketball coach who, in nine seasons as Head Coach at New Mexico State University, led the Aggies to a 198-111 overall record (.641 winning percentage) and a 103-37 record (.736) in conference play. • Under his direction, the Aggies appeared in the postseason each of the last five seasons and six of the last seven years. • Coach Menzies led New Mexico State to five appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15). New Mexico State also advanced to the postseason in 2015-16, appearing in the NIT. • Coach Menzies guided New Mexico State to five conference tournament championships and three regular season conference titles. • In 2015-16, Coach Menzies led NMSU to its fifth straight 20-win season and seventh in eight years, as NMSU was 23-11 overall and 13-1 in conference play. Under his direction, the Aggies have won 35 straight home conference games, which is the second-longest such streak in the nation. • In 2014-15, Coach Menzies was honored as the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year. • At New Mexico State, Coach Menzies coached a pair of AP All-Americans, two WAC Players of the Year, two WAC Freshmen of the Year, 20 players selected to the all-conference team, five to the all-newcomer team and seven to the all-defensive team. BOR-2b, Page 1 of 2 • Coach Menzies has a reputation as one of the nation’s best recruiters and is highly respected by coaches at the professional, college, international and prep/high school levels of the game. • Prior to becoming head coach at New Mexico State, Coach Menzies spent two seasons (2005-06 and 2006-07) as an assistant coach under Rick Pitino at Louisville. Prior to joining the Cardinals’ staff, he spent one year (2004-05) at UNLV under Lon Kruger. Having coached at UNLV, he understands the traditions and expectations of Runnin’ Rebel Basketball. • Before his time at UNLV, Coach Menzies was at USC for a season (2003-04) as an assistant under Henry Bibby, and he spent four years (1999-03) at San Diego State under Steve Fisher. He has also worked as an assistant coach at Santa Monica College and Cal State Sacramento. • All told, he brings 25 years of experience as either a head coach or assistant in college basketball to UNLV. 6. POTENTIAL ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE REQUEST/RECOMMENDATION: Some may question the fact that Coach Menzies’ teams have not yet had success in the postseason. 7. ALTERNATIVE(S) TO WHAT IS BEING REQUESTED/RECOMMENDED: The hiring of a different person to serve as the Men’s Head Basketball Coach at UNLV. 8.
