BATMAN/SUPERMAN - IYSI project (#2209) Author(s) Created: 11/27/2016 05:46 AM (PT) Jaroslav Točík (Masaryk University) - [email protected] Public: 11/27/2016 05:50 AM (PT) 1) What's the main question being asked or hypothesis being tested in this study? My hypothesis is inspired by Batman VS. Superman movie - my prediction is that Batman is better superhero character than Superman. Because of that – movies and tv series featuring Batman (movies where Batman is the main character – not just one of many like JLA etc.) will tend to have higher IMDB ratings than movies and tv series featuring Superman (same criteria as in Batman’s case). 2) Describe the key dependent variable(s) specifying how they will be measured. IMDB rating (in percents) of 50 lates movies/TV series. 3) How many and which conditions will participants be assigned to? One condition: IMDB rating of movies and TV series where one the superheroes is main character - based on Wikipedia's lists like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Animated_Batman_films. 4) Specify exactly which analyses you will conduct to examine the main question/hypothesis. T-test for independent samples using alpha 0.05. 5) Any secondary analyses? No secondary analyses. 6) How many observations will be collected or what will determine sample size? No need to justify decision, but be precise about exactly how the number will be determined. I will be using independent t-test and I am predicting there will be difference of d = 0.7. Based on power calculations (for power 0.8) and smaller effect size of 0.6, my sample will be 44 Batman movies/TV series and 44 Superman movies/TV series including both animated and live-action movies/TV series and including straight to video movies. But I will be aiming little higher - using 50 movies. N1 (Batman) = 50 N2 (Superman) = 50 7) Anything else you would like to pre-register? (e.g., data exclusions, variables collected for exploratory purposes, unusual analyses planned?) Exclusion criteria: Fan-made movies, movies/TV series where superhero is not main character (JLA etc.), excluding other appearances like "someone dressed like Superman" in Big Bang Theory. 8) Have any data been collected for this study already? No, no data have been collected for this study yet Available at http://aspredicted.org/kcgwj.pdf Version of AsPredicted Questions: 1.05 (Permanently archived at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://aspredicted.org/kcgwj.pdf).
