Introduction to Yngling Sailing Rachid Mazini For the YCC Yngling boats An Yngling is a sailing boat which the International Yngling Association call an "agreeable cross between a planning dinghy and a keelboat.“ It was designed in 1967 by Jan Herman Linge to build a keelboat for his young son, and thus named it Yngling, the Norwegian word for "youngster"; the name is unrelated to the House of Yngling or the Ynglinga saga. The Yngling received ISAF International Class status in 1979 and was chosen as the Olympic Women's Keelboat for 2004 and 2008. Since then, about 5000 boats have been build and sailing all over the world. 2 Yngling Description 3 Sailing on Ynglings Ynglings are the most popular boats among YCC members Extensive use of all over the full season Popular among beginners. Safe boats for leisure sailing, family members and children, sailing novice or first time sailing adventurers Very good introductory boats, easy to ring/unrig, easy to sail A big advantage: as a (small) keelboat, they don’t capsize People who are afraid of failing in the water feel safe and confident Some disadvantages: A bit heavy and slow for people who are used to fast dinghies. This depends on the win condition. Above 3-4 Bft, they are fantastic They don’t capsize so people who are afraid of getting wet can still use them, most of the time in a bad sailing way (position, balance…) They are solid boats, requiring relatively low maintenance This does not mean you should not take good care of them. How to safely and confidently leave and enter the harbor. How to perform correctly all necessary sailing maneuvers Tacking, jybing, stopping, sailing with different wind directions, doing a 360 turn, MOB (man over board) to retrieve a falling crew … How to trim (set) the sails correctly in different wind conditions The aim of the course is to get you confident enough to enjoy sailing on Ynglings. Other activities. You are STRONGLY advised to join: Thursday evening practices Monthly regattas Possible Yngling training evenings after the end of the courses, or training days If there is a demand of such extra events, as they take time to organize. Please attend/review the sailing theory courses given by Michel Cornevin, Sebastian Lopienski, Rob Veenhof… They cover basics on sailing maneuvers, general safety rules, lake rules… The course timetable, startup date, instructor list will be posted next week. Not always obvious! 11 YCC Yngling test The Y test is to verify that you are able to: Safely leave, and return to, the mooring place and the harbor Do all necessary maneuvers in a correct way. Know the sailing rules, safety rules It is not meant to fail you, but rather to correct few things you may have missed. You can try the test anytime you feel ready for it. You can also be a crew of somebody doing the test. Instructors are usually not scary. So don’t hesitate. One issue is the wind. And it can be scarce In July and August. Once ready for a test. Send me an email and I will attribute an examiner to schedule the test. 12 Avoiding contacts while sailing a Yngling Most of the “contacts” happen to be inside the harbor: Against the wall while coming back to the mooring place. Against nearby boats in the mooring place More seriously against other boats while sailing inside the harbor Don’t Panic! You can always control the boat as long as It has some speed! Some “contacts” happened during regattas Crews failed to avoid the ultimate regatta rule There is no priority, only right of way, and they need to avoid crashes! One can protest if the others didn’t respect the rules. Don’t wait for others to take action. Slowing the boat The space around the helm, at the back and on the side, is FORBIDDEN 18 Wrong crew positioning, bad helming. 19 Some Common mistakes on Yngling Sail trimming: Too much tension on the gib Vertical lines (wrinkles) along the gib. halyard. As soon as you start seing vertical lines, you should ease the gib halyard till they disappear. And you are set.. 20 Some Common mistakes on Yngling Mooring: This destroys the buoy 21 Some Common mistakes on Yngling Mooring: Just clip the mooring line on the ring after casting off Good mooring Please don’t loose the orange buoy when casting off! 22 Janisco Mooring I 23 Janisco Mooring II 24 Sail trimming in high wind There is no reefing on a Yngling: mainsail surface does not change The only way to reduce the “force” on the sail is to change its shape: Remember: A flat sail “feels” less wind pressure To do that. Only 2 possibilities: Tighten the outhaul Pull down the backstay Please release both of them when finished sailing 25 Yngling Maintenance You are required, as a Y user, to help with the maintenance of these boats. Many small items can be easily fixed/replaced. You can always get in touch with the maintenance responsible to learn how to fix new things. They will be glad to help. Some major issue with the Ynglings extensive use: Unrig the boat correctly and neatly. Store the sails correctly, cool the all the sheets, DO NOT LEAVE ANY TRASH behind you. Boats need cleaning from time to time… and it is done easily with a brush. This season, we will try to enforce that people who use Y’s should clean them from time to time The deck is always a mess… This should not be the case anymore The hull/keel should not be a heaven for moss, algae.. There will be cleaning campaigns now and then announced on the yngling-active mailing list. Volunteering work will be gratified with a a huge “thank you” and a week-end outing on the SU’s/J80 in the summer. 26 Summary Sailing on Ynglins is a very good introduction to sailing on keelboats. The course and all other activities are meant to get you to the point of enjoying it and even wanting more. Do not be worried/afraid of the wind. Learn how to understand and use it. As a Yngling sailor, you are required to go out sailing when there is 4-5 Bft. Please ask questions. Talk to people and be take initiatives. You will learn and gain experience much faster.
