As Confucius said “At fifty, I knew the decrees of Heaven.”, it is the mission of nurturing talents that we are accomplishing. In celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the College, we hope to express our gratitude to the founders of the College, to the chairman and members of Board of Trustees and Endowment Fund Committee, to our staff members, to our alumni and to all individuals who have contributed towards the steady development of United College. We also hope to exhort members of the community to support our development, and to call upon alumni and students to extend their support in our pursuit of excellence and fulfillment of the College’s mission to serve the people of Hong Kong and China and the world. I am going to share with you our Golden Jubilee celebrations and the main tasks we have accomplished, as well as our visions and challenges ahead. 1 Fung Kwok Pui October 2007 The Year under Review: Golden Jubilee United College marks an important milestone in the academic year 2006-07 ever since its foundation half a century ago. For the past 50 years, United College has been forging ahead with Hong Kong with its innovative efforts. Thus we have chosen "Together We Innovate, United We Advance" as the slogan of our 50th Anniversary celebrations. A wide range of activities were held in honour of the occasion. These programmes are organized for all stakeholders of the College, including trustees, members of Endowment Fund Committee, staff, students, alumni and friends. The programmes can be classified into seven categories, namely, Special Celebration Events, Academic Activities, Art and Cultural Programmes, Publication, Health Series, as well as Alumni and Student Activities. A special website (www.cuhk.edu.hk/uc/uc50) has been created for the anniversary events. Special Celebration Events * The United College Golden Jubilee Anniversary Activities Kick-off Ceremony marking the launching of a whole series of celebration activities in that academic year was held on 15 September 2006. The Ceremony was officiated by Members of United College 50th Anniversary Activities Steering Committee. * Weeks of celebration activities including an opening ceremony, a fun run and an open bazaar and the Ceremony marking the College 50th anniversary were successfully concluded on 20 October 2006. Over a thousand students and their parents and guests of the College attended the anniversary ceremony at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, with Professor Arthur K C Li, Secretary for Education and Manpower HKSAR Government and Mr Shum Choi Sang, Chairman of United College Board of Trustees, as the officiating guests. The Ceremony was followed by a College Birthday Party held on the College campus. The 2 celebration reached its climax with the lion dance by the College Chinese Martial Arts Society and the cutting of a 50-lb birthday cake sponsored by the College Staff Association. The highlight of the anniversary activities was the "feast-for-a-thousand" held in the same evening. Over 1,300 College members and guests enjoyed the dinner. The College Alumni Association sponsored roasted pigs for the banquet. It was a wonderful night with a variety show performed by students as well as pop singers. *A Launching Ceremony for the Golden Jubilee Pictorial History of United College 1956 - 2006 cum the Opening of the Historical Picture Exhibition for Golden Jubilee Anniversary was held on 10 October 2006 at the University Library Exhibition Gallery. The officiating guests, Professor Ng Lun Ngai Ha and Professor Ng Yen Tak, Editors; Professor Chen Tien Chi, Honorary Fellow; Mr Ho Man Sum, Vice President of United College Alumni Association and I, conducted the ribbon cutting ceremony. Historical pictures of United College were presented, showing the growth and development of the College. The exhibitions were held at Foyer Gallery, Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, University Library Exhibition Gallery as well as Wu Chung Multimedia Library. * The United College 50th Anniversary Banquet, jointly organized by the United College Alumni Association and United College Staff Association, was held on 2 December 2006 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. Historical pictures of United College were also presented at the Banquet, showing the growth and development of the College, and refreshing College members their treasured moments in life. The Banquet was officiated by the Honorary Patron of the evening, Dr Edgar W K Cheng, Chairman of the Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as Mr Shum Choi Sang, Chairman of Board of Trustees of the College and Dr Thomas H C Cheung, Chairman of the Endowment Fund Committee, Vice-Chairman of Board of Trustees and President of United College Alumni Associaiton. Over 500 College trustees, alumni, guests and members of the University and United College attended the Banquet. A video show, "Snapshots of United College:50 years of Advancement and Innovation" of the College's history over the past 50 years was also presented during the dinner. * An exhibition of photographs of the Golden Jubilee celebration activities was also held in July 2007 at the College campus. * The Ceremony marking the completion of the College 50th Anniversary Celebration was held on 16 July 2007. The officiating guests were Mr Shum Choi Sang, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees and the College 50th Anniversary Activities Steering Committee, Dr Thomas H C Cheung, Chairman of the College Endowment Fund Committee and President of the College Alumni Association, Mr Calvin Chau H F, President of the College Student Union and I. The Ceremony paid tributes to the College trustees, donors, staff, alumni, students and friends for all their support to the College 50th Anniversary celebrations throughout this year. Certificates of Appreciation were also presented during the Ceremony. The College also presented the whole set of 50th Anniversary Publications to the University Library System, as well as the 50th Anniversary souvenir set to the Shum Choi Sang United College Archives. Academic Activities The College continued to organize different academic activities such as lectures, international conferences, seminars and symposia during the year. * The First Golden Jubilee Alumni Lecture by Professor Lau Ngar Cheung Gabriel, (UC 1974 Physics alumnus) from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Princeton University, was held on 15 September 2006. Over 1000 College trustees, staff, students and alumni attended the talk entitled "A broad Survey of 'El Nino'". *Professor Leung Pak Wah Edwin (UC 1972 History alumnus), Professor and Chairman, 3 Department of Asian Studies, Seton Hall University, New Jersey, delivered the Second Golden Jubilee Alumni Lecture on 24 November 2006. He spoke on "Building Cultural Bridges between the East and the West: Some Personal Reflections" and the Lecture attracted over 1000 guests. * Two distinguished visiting scholars visited United College during the year. (1) Professor F Sherwood Rowland, 1995 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Donald Bren Research Professor of Chemistry and Earth System Science, University of California, Irvine, U.S.A., visited the College between 15 and 21 October 2006 and delivered two public lectures entitled "Stratospheric Ozone Depletion" and "Greenhouse Gases, Global Warming and Climate Change". The lectures were well attended by government officials, representatives from environment concern bodies and scholars from other tertiary institutions, as well as members of the University. (2) The "Father of Hybrid Rice", Professor Yuan Longping, Director-General of the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center, visited United College between 10 and 18 March 2007 as the second Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the College's 50th Anniversary Year. During his visit to United College, Professor Yuan delivered a public lecture titled "Progress in Breeding of Super Hybrid Rice" which was well received by the University and the public. * The College also organized an international conference titled "United Uplifting Hong Kong" from 9 to 11 November 2006. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lawrence J Lau, made the opening address. Professor Wang Gangwu, Professor Richard Estes, Professor Lawrence J Lau and Professor Kuan Hsin Chi were the keynote speakers of the 3-day conference. * The International Conference on Travel Writings in Chinese was held on United College campus on 24 and 25 November 2006. The Conference was jointly presented with Ming Pao Monthly, Association of Travel Writings in Chinese, as well as the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the University. An open seminar on Travel Writings in Chinese was also held at the Hong Kong Central Library on 25 November 2006. * To pay tributes and respect to the seven former Heads of United College, the College continued to organize the "Heads of College Lecture Series" which were inaugurated in February 2005. We had the honour to have invited Dr Hsueh Shou Sheng, the fourth Head of the College, to delivered his own Lecture on 1 December 2006. He spoke on "Significance of Golden Jubilee". * To promote academic interests within the College, United College has organized the Lecture Series of Members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Members of Chinese Academy of Engineering. The first talk was delivered by Professor Kung Hsiangfu who spoke on "Functional Genemics and Drug Research" on 19 January 2007. Professor Sun Sai Ming Samuel was the second speaker who delivered a talk on "Tales of Golden Rice" on 9 February 2007. * The Golden Jubilee Annual Workshop of United College was held on 2 March 2007. The topic of this year's workshop was "A 50-year Reflection: Teaching and Research of Political Sciences in Hong Kong".
