Seeger Fest: Opening Night will be an evening alongside Pete Seeger’s beloved Hudson River at Pier 46 in Manhattan. The Chapin Sisters, Kristen Graves and others will sing a one-hour concert with the backdrop of the setting sun. Then there will be a screening of Pete Seeger: The Power of Song, an Emmy-award winning documentary featuring Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Others. Bring dinner and a picnic blanket and celebrate Pete Seeger on a Hudson River pier. Arrive early. Friends and family come together to remember their friend, neighbor and mentor at a local Hudson Valley theater where Seeger played hundreds of times. Artists include Jasiri X, the reggae group Rootz Revelators, The Owens Brothers, The Chapin Sisters, Kristen Graves, The Tony Lee Thomas Band and Julia Haltigan plus surprise guests. The event is hosted by Rocking the Boat. Rocking the Boat builds boats with Bronx teens and then does environmental science with them on the Bronx River. Pete Seeger was involved in Rocking the Boat and it was one of his favorite community organizations doing grassroots work to empower youth while changing the world. Noon – 6:00 PM – Saturday, July 19, 2014 – Hunt’s Point Riverside Park, Lafayette Ave. and Edgewater Rd., Bronx, NY 10474 Pete and Toshi Seeger Film and Photo Exhibit will be a gallery opening of rarely seen film footage and photographs by and of Pete and Toshi Seeger. While Pete was known for writing songs as Turn! Turn! Turn! and co-writing If I Had a Hammer and Where Have All the Flowers Gone? few people know that he and his wife made films about music across nationally and internationally in the fifties and sixties. 8:00 PM – Saturday, July 19, 2014 – El Taller Latino Americano, 2710 Broadway, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10025 A Memorial Concert for Pete and Toshi Seeger is a free, large-scale event presented by Lincoln Center Out of Doors. The musicians who knew Pete Seeger the best and worked with him the most are coming together to play tribute to their lifelong friend and mentor. There will be performances by Judy Collins, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary, Holly Near, Fred Hellerman of The Weavers, Paul Winter Consort, Dar Williams & Dan Zanes, Martha Redbone, Guy Davis, George Wein, Tom Chapin & The Chapin Sisters, David Amram with Adira & Alana Amram, Tiokisan Ghosthorse, Emma’s Revolution, Kim & Reggie Harris, Mike + Ruthy, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion and many others. Produced and hosted by Gina Belafonte, Harry Belafonte’s daughter, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, Pete Seeger’s grandson and music activist Jason Samel, this concert brings brings very different musicians together who stand for a common cause: using music as a way to fight injustice.
