Winnipeg totalled 70.5 points in the 12-sport, five-day competition for seven regions. Winnipeg won 72 medals overall - 27 gold, 36 silver and 19 bronze. Two of Winnipeg's gold medals came in alpine skiing and men's hockey. Runner up in the aggregate race was defending champion Eastman with 63 points. Interlake and Parkland tied at 60, followed by Central with 58.5, Norman with 52.5 and Westman with 51.5. The Larry Desjardins Trophy, awarded to the region showing the greatest improvement in its final standings, was won by the Interlake region. Interlake won gold medals in broomball and basketball. The Regional Games Participation Award, to the region with the highest participation per capita, was awarded to the Parkland region. The new 'Spirit of the Games-Fair Play Award', which best exemplifies the Manitoba Games spirit of good sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition, went to Westman region. - more - MG-3179 (Rev. 89) MG-3i79 Pe 99) • - 2 - WINNIPEG REGION TOPS The Manitoba Winter Games attracted more than 10,000 athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers to the regional championships with more than 1,300 athletes advancing to the provincial finals in Carman and the Rural Municipality of Dufferin. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to the top three places in each sport. "The 1990 Manitoba Winter Games were an overwhelming success and a credit to Carman, the Rural Municipality of Dufferin and its dedicated corps of volunteers," said Minster responsible for Sport Jim Ernst.
