September 30, 2020 Dear Friends, The Daniel K Inouye Institute and the University of Hawaii Public Policy Center just had their second Pau Hana + Policy Talk Story to a virtual full house on September 28. Our topic, “The ‘Netflix Generation’: How the Demand for Streaming Television and Film Could Help Hawaii.” Featuring: • Amy Hill (Magnum PI, 50 First Dates), Actress • Dan Lin (Aladdin, It, The Lego Movies), Producer • Melvin Mar (Jumanji Movies, Doogie Kamealoha), Producer • Donne Dawson, State Film Commissioner • Moderated By Chris Lee, Founder & Director, Academy for Creative Media Systems at the University of Hawaii It was informative, exciting and provides an opportunity to grow a clean segment of our economy in a “bubble” with a modest investment and incentives. If you missed it, you can watched it by clicking here https://youtu.be/hR4itqdlV9E . Hawai‘i Community Foundation • 827 Fort Street Mall • Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96813 • 808.537.6333 www.danielkinouyeinstitute.org Also, at the risk of being “political”, I am exercising my personal privilege to be able to share with you an amazing story and friendship which dated back to 1972, when a young, brand new U.S. Senator from Delaware arrived in DC only to learn of the tragic loss of his wife, young daughter and serious injury suffered by his sons. Dan Inouye was one of the senators who reached out to support Joe Biden, asking him to “stay for 6 months, just 6 months.” Their friendship began then, and they would remain tight over the decades – so much so, that Inouye agreed to serve as his Co-Chair for Biden’s Presidential Run in 1987. We are sharing a clip of Dan Inouye’s introduction of his friend Joe Biden for nostalgia sake. “I saw him as a young man faced with a most horrible tragedy in his family. A tragedy of such dimension that most of us would have just collapsed and given up. But he did not,” Inouye said. Aloha, Jennifer .
