Exploring Burgundy: Corton Corton Is a Grand Cru Vineyard Producing

Exploring Burgundy: Corton Corton is a Grand Cru vineyard producing mostly red with some white wines, and is in fact the only Grand Cru appellation for red wine in the Côte de Beaune. It also happens to be the largest Grand Cru in Burgundy. The three wines from this area at GWC hail from two climats within the Aloxe-Corton commune: Corton-Pougets and Le Corton. Pinot Noirs from Corton show their magic when made from vines found mid-slope upon the area's large hill. These are structured wines of muscle and vigor with formidable tannic backbones. As a side note, Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne was said to have enjoyed wines from Corton (as well as from Fronsac in Bordeaux, which we also stock at GWC, but that story is for another time!). Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Grand Cru 2016 $129.99 This full-bodied gem from a difficult vintage displays tones of red and dark fruit, coffee, and substantial tannins. 18/20 from Jancis Robinson and 94 points from Decanter. Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Grand Cru 2018 $129.99 Highly aromatic with notes of cherry, black cherry, and chocolate, this winner also delivers an alluring full-bodied structure. 95 points from Wine Enthusiast. Bouchard Pere et Fils Le Corton Grand Cru 2010 $121.99 Look for deep black fruits, zesty savoriness, and fine-grained, smooth tannins. With ten years of age, we at GWC recommend opening this wine tonight! 94 points from Allen Meadows at Burghound. .
