In 1961, Goa was annexed in India. In 1965, Goa came into existence as a single district. In 1987, it acquired the status of statehood and was divided into two districts namely North Goa and South Goa. Geographically, the district has a total area of 1,966 sq km and occupies the rank 1st in State and 500th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 15°16'N latitude, 74°08'E longitude and 1167 m altitude. In the year 2015, there was a total 66.12% forest area of total geographical area. It is bounded by the district of North Goa to the North, the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state to the East and South, the Arabian Sea in Western Coast. The actual rainfall in the district was 2984.4 mm in the year of 2016-17. Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 sub-districts, 23 towns and 140 villages. Konkani is the administrative language of the district. The district came into existence on 30th May, 1987 with its administrative headquarters located at Margao at the distance of 35 kms from the state capital. There are 1 parliamentary and 17 assembly constituencies in the district. Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 1,43,728 households with a total population of 6,40,537 comprising 3,22,463 are males and 3,18,074 are females which causing it to rank 2nd in the State and 515th in India. The density of population of the district is 326 (persons per sq km). The sex ratio is pegged at 986 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 946 (females per 1000 males). The schedule caste population of the district is recorded as 7,843 including 3,915 are males and 3,928 are females. The percentage of Schedule Caste is 30.82%. The schedule tribe population of the district is recorded as 92,669 including 45,124 are males and 47,545 are females. The percentage of Schedule tribe is 62.08%. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 8.73% including 7.94% were males and 9.55% were females. Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture, tourism and mining mainly. Mineral iron ore is primarily found here. Rice, paddy, maize and pulses are produced here on a large scale. Some other products main products in the region are coconut, cashew-nut, areca nut, mango, jackfruit, banana, pineapple, etc. industrially also the district is quite well developed.
