In green is shown the proposal that Ælfgifu was the sister of Æthelweard the historian, great­great­grandson of King Æthelred I. In blue is the identification of Ælfgifu as the niece of Æthelstan Half­King, and his suggested descent from Æthelred Mucel, father in law of Alfred the Great. Other variations have also been suggested, for example that Ælfgifu's mother Æthelgifu might have been the widow of Æthelstan's brother Eadric, rather than his sister. The theories should be taken with some reservation. As Simon Keynes cautions (2004), there "do not seem to be any compelling or decisive grounds for presuming" that the testatrix Ælfgifu of the later will was Eadwig's wife, "or indeed that the testatrix's brother Æthelweard was Æthelweard the chronicler."[1] 1.
