Your reliable and fervent assistance have made this undertaking achievable. I would also like .to thank Dr. Ilsa Schwarz and Dr. Lori Swanson for serving on my thesis committee. I appreciate the consistent interest and excellent feedback youhave provided throughoutthe research process. Lastly, I would like to thankmy familyand friends, whose support and encouragement made this work possible. V ABSTRACT Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the use of both developmental and non-developmental phonological processes in a group of young children using cochlear implants. Participants: 6 preschool children with severe to profound binaural hearing loss with cochlear implants Method: 15-25 minute conversational speech samples fromsix children were collected at three-month intervalsover a period of 12 -2 1 months fora prior study. These samples were then transcribed and analyzed using Natural Phonological Analysis (NPA) and a data collection form created solely forthe purpose of this study. Data Analysis: Pearson correlations were used to determine relationships among the variables. Z-scores were also used to make comparisons with the available normative data. Results: Possible explanations forthe use of developmental as well as non developmental processes in this population are discussed. These results have implications forthe assessment and clinical treatment of phonological errors in the speech of children with cochlear implants. vii TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER1 INTRODUCTION........................... ....................................... 1 Hearing and Hearing Impairment .. .. 1 Cochlear Implants. 2 Phonological Processes. 4 CHAPTER 2 REVIEWOF LITERATURE......................... ........................... 9 Speech Characteristics of Children with Hearing Impairment......... 9 Speech Characteristics of Children Using Cochlear Implants.......... 13 Speech Intelligibility of Children with Hearing Impairment............ 14 Vowel Productions of Children with Hearing Impairment.............. 16 Phonological Processes. 19 Theoretical Background. 19 Description andCategorization of Processes. 21 NormalProcess Suppression.. .. .... .. .. .. .. .. ... .. ... .. ... .. .. .. 23 Phonological Process Use by Children with Hearing Impairment. 25 Phonological Process Use by Children with CochlearImplants ... 27 Natural Process Analysis. 28 CHAPTER3 METHOD.................................. ......................................... 31 Participants .. .. 31 Materials. 31 Procedures. 31 Data Analysis. 33 Reliability Testing. 33 CHAPTER4 RESULTS.......................................................................... 35 Suppression of Developmental Process Use................................. 35 Comparisons to Normative Data ............................................. 37 Suppression of Non-developmental Process Use........................... 47 vm Speech Sounds Affected by Non-Developmental Process Use.......... 47 Consonants. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 4 7 Vowels..................................................................... 53 CHAPTERS DISCUSSION...... ............................................................... ,. 55 Clinical Implications............................................................ 61 Conclusion........................................................................ 62 REFERENCES................................................................... 65 APPENDICES................................................................... 73 Appendix A............................................................. 75 Appendix B............................................................. 79 Appendix C............................................................. 81 Appendix D............................................................. 83 Appendix E.............................................................. 103 VITA.............................................................................. 123 IX LIST OF TABLES Table 1.
