It is one of the oldest surviving universities in Spain, and the oldest in the Valencian Community, and is regarded as one of Spain's leading academic institutions. The University was founded in 1499, and currently has around 55,000 students. There are three campuses, and it is on the Blasco Ibañez Campus that the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, Philosophy and Educational Sciences, Psychology, Geography and History, Languages , Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Nursing are found. The subjects covered include literature across various historical periods and regions; they also offer courses in various aspects of Spanish linguistics. The department publishes the philological journal, ‘Quaderns de Filologia’. The Faculty also has several major research groups, the most significant with regards to the Spanish Language and Literature is Val.Es.Co. (Valencia. Español Coloquial), a research group that focuses on the analysis of colloquial Spanish. The Blasco Ibañez Campus is located at the top of the Av de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez near one of Valencia’s major attractions, the Royal Gardens. Valencia itself is the third largest city in Spain (after Madrid and Barcelona), with around 809,000 inhabitants in the administrative centre. Valencia is also Spain's third largest metropolitan area, with a population ranging from 1.7 to 2.3 million. The city has global city status. The Port of Valencia is the 5th busiest container port in Europe and the largest on the Mediterranean Sea. The city dates back to the Roman Period and has a rich history. Major monuments include Valencia Cathedral, the Torres de Serranos, the Torres de Quart, the Llotja de la Seda (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996), and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (City of Arts and Sciences), an entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela.The Museu de Belles Arts de València houses a large collection of paintings from the 14th to the 18th centuries, including works by Velázquez, El Greco, and Goya, as well as an important series of engravings by Piranesi. The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (Valencian Institute of Modern Art) houses both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art and photography.
