The University of Illinois at Springfeld ofers academic programs at the Peoria Center, and all three universities ofer classes at University Center of Lake County. Online classes expand educational opportunities for students worldwide. In development now are plans for the Discovery Partners Institute, a joint education, research, and innovation institute led by the U of I System, to be located in Chicago. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government from the U of I System’s Institute of Government and Public Afairs. `Urbana scientists built an artifcially intelligent “Cyberslug” that has simple self-awareness and behaves a lot like the organism on which it was modeled. `In order to help address a growing shortage of K-12 teachers, UIS ofers a dual credit course for area high school students interested in careers in education. `Researchers at UIC collaborated on the development of an app that may help predict and monitor manic and depressive episodes in people with bipolar disorder by monitoring keyboard dynamics metadata such as typing speed and rhythm, backspacing, and auto-correct. `First responders from across the state experience hands-on training at the Illinois Fire Service Institute in Champaign. IFSI is the oldest continuous fre training institution in the U.S. `Researchers at UIC are working across disciplines to tackle the opioid crisis in Illinois—gaining insights through data analysis, examining pharmacy policies, advocating for legislation, educating the public, and ofering alternative pain management solutions. `Three computer science students from UIS fnished in the top ten percent of individuals nationwide during the National Cyber League spring 2018 regular season competitions. `The Rare Book and Manuscript Library in Urbana is home to a manuscript written by Sir Isaac Newton that provides instructions for making the philosopher’s stone, a substance thought to convert base metals into precious metals. `OSF Healthcare is the frst corporate sponsor of the U of I System-led Discovery Partners Institute and is working with students from across the system on innovative solutions for healthcare challenges. `Atmospheric scientists from Urbana-Champaign found that melting Arctic sea ice, part of global climate change, may be a contributing factor to the reduction in recent tornado activity in the U.S. `The frst-ever UIS Student Union opened in January 2018 and includes dining services, a cofee shop, meeting and event space, and study areas. It serves as a social hub for student life on the growing campus. `The UI Health clinic in Terminal 2 of O’Hare International Airport provides urgent medical care, for travelers from all over the world and airport employees. The water-soluble, biodegradable glassy sugar structures have multiple applications in biomedical engineering, cancer research, and device manufacturing. HUMAN -CENTERED, DESIGN -THINKING Graphic design and industrial design students in the College of Fine and Applied Arts have created immersive reality scenarios to help people who are soon to be released from prison meet certain challenges, such as learning to pay at the pump for gas. Rebecca Ginsburg, director of the university’s Education Justice Project, said immersive reality experiences could be helpful as part of a comprehensive re-entry program. FINDING THE FUEL OF THE FUTURE The new, 42,000 square-foot Integrated Bioprocessing Research Laboratory (IBRL) on the Urbana-Champaign campus is a state-of-the-art pilot- scale facility that will accelerate the commercialization of bioprocessing technologies in renewable chemicals and fuels. It is designed to scale bioprocessing technologies and help bridge the gap between academic research and industrial commercialization.
