Health Action in Crises Democratic Republic of the Congo Response, health status, WHO's activities Democratic Republic of the Congo: Response The world deadliest crisis: ; Almost four million death since the beginning of the conflict 1998 ; Almost 24 million persons affected (out of 60 million) ; 3.4 million IDPs and returnees and 500,000 refugees in neighbouring countries ; Five provinces most affected: North Katanga, South Kivu, North Kivu, Maniema and Province Orientale (Ituri) Dr Emilienne Anikpo Democratic Republic of the Congo: Response The world deadliest crisis: ; Almost four million death since the beginning of the conflict 1998 ; Almost 24 million persons affected (out of 60 million) ; 3.4 million IDPs and returnees and 500,000 refugees in neighbouring countries ; Five provinces most affected: North Katanga, South Kivu, North Kivu, Maniema and Province Orientale (Ituri) Dr Emilienne Anikpo DRC : Health Status ; Out of the almost 3.8 million deaths only 2 % died because of direct impact of the war (injuries) ; All others died as a result of treatable health and nutritional diseases ; Malaria accounts for 45 % of childhood death. Acute respiratory infections, diarrhoea and measles are the other important causes of morbidity and mortality among children. ; Child mortality account for 45.4 % although they represent less than 20 % of the population ; Maternal mortality rates in the East of the country above 1,800 per 100,000 live births, i.e. double of the average sub-Saharan Africa rate Dr Emilienne Anikpo DRC : Health Status ; 400 hospitals ; 5078 health centres ; Almost no public funding for the system ; Actors are NGOs, private and church related institutions ; Problem of user fee limiting access especially to secondary care Dr Emilienne Anikpo DRC : WHO's activities ; Strengthening its public health presence in the conflict affected area and in Kinshasa ; Providing coordination for polio eradication and surveillance ; Responding to disease outbreaks like Typhoid, Measles, Cholera and Plague ; Providing essential supplies to cover IDPs needs ; Starting Minimal Health Package project in conflict affected areas ; Started effort to provide health assistance to GBV victims ; Supporting MOH in launching new ACT based malaria treatment protocols and providing limited antimalarial supplies Dr Emilienne Anikpo.
